My question. A guy has a Maxstar 200SD for sale. He says he picked it and another welder up at an estate sale. The welder doesn't have a cord so he hasn't tested it. His plan was to put a cord on it and go from there but has decided to get something else.He is asking $200. I haven't seen it yet so all I know is what I've been told. Should I buy it? It's not a ton of money but if it does weld it would be a heck of a dealThanks in advance.
Reply:Yeah. Bet it does not work. Common ploy to remove the cord from a dead dynasty. From what I remember my Dynasty200 came factory wired with the cord. Removing it is sketchy. You could find a cord and wire it up. Does it have all of the other peripherals for testing under power?Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:It's worth the gamble in my opinion....I've bought many untested welders, some costing far more then that one.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:I wouldn't unless you can test it. Shouldn't take much to put a cord on it. If you want to gamble sure. You also could send me 200$ and you might get it back.
Reply:Find a service book on it with wiring diagram. Bring a battery drill, cord with male plug in end and alligator clips on the other. Open it up, clip on clamps and try it. I think the Maxstar 200 is a auto link machine. It will run on 120/230 volts single phase. I think they have a 3 phase only version too. Verify power input label .
Reply:Test it or you're throwing $200 away. Sounds like a load of horse crap. Sorry.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

Reply:Tell the guy you'll give him more money if you can have it checked out to see if it works. It's also possible it's stolen.

Reply:He wants to get something else vs a state of the art inverter for $200 bucks vs a plug to put it to work. I put much faith in my fellow man but..
Reply:Well, I bought it. Gave the guy $150 for it. About a 2 hour drive one way but the wife and I like to road trip. The cord was cut off short. I didn't test it. Looked inside and didn't see anything that looked burnt. Was really clean. Ill throw a new cord on it and see if it powers up. If it welds, great for me. If not I might see what my local miller dealer would charge to check it over. Knowing what it could be worth I took a chance. Wouldn't be the first time I wasted some money. Thanks for all the opinions.
Reply:I bought a burned up Dynasty SD for $100 once, but dude literally brought it to me and I already knew what the deal was. I ended up giving it to a friend for doing me a favor. I think he sold it for some decent money as a parts machine. Made me happy we both got a benefit from it.Hopefully you'll get lucky. At this point, you might as well just hook it up and try turning it on. Service is probably gonna charge you around $60-120 to look at it, and if it's junk, forget it in most cases.Red wire is not used for single phase power, attach black and white to hots and green is always ground.Post up how you make out.Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948
Reply:Update.I put a new cord on the Maxtar. Plugged it in and flipped the switch. It powered up. A good start. All the mode buttons function. Now I have to get a set of Dinse connectors so I can hook up my leads and see if she welds.
Reply:There's no way you'll lose money on that deal. Just check the sold listings on eBay. In the last two months, 4 that were listed as "broken/does not power on" have sold: one for $200, two for $300 each, and one for $400 (all plus shipping). The one that sold for $200 looks like it was run over with a truck (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Miller-Maxst...p2047675.l2557). People really over pay for things on eBay...which is great for sellers (even if you factor in the 10% fee). Some people are just lazy. When I bought my "as-is" Multimatic 250 for $150, the only thing that needed to be replaced was the plastic control connector for the MIG gun. You couldn't plug in the connector because it was mashed up -- obvious damage -- and the guy had even bought a new connector planning to fix it himself but he never got around to it. Once I got home, 10 minutes with the drill and some rivets and I was up and running. When I wanted to downsize a few months back and listed it for $950, I had half a dozen replies in the first few hours and it was sold to a guy in a matter of hours without any sort of haggling. So I can only assume that I under-priced it given the market around here.Anyways, if it powers on and seems fine, I'd be surprised if it didn't weld, too. Sounds like you found yourself one heck of a deal my friend. Good luck!
