I am currently working for a municipality in the building maintenance department.  My job usually consists of electrical and hvac repair but every now and then I get lucky and get to weld something. This time its a book drop for the local library.  Its been ran over a few times over the years and some how they always got it beat back into shape, but this time it just wasn't happening so I convinced the boss to make use of the two sheets of 1/4 inch plate we have laying around......heres the start of the project. More pics as it goes.

Reply:Its made out of very thin sheet metal. My plan is to remove the top part with the fancy book drop mechanism and put it on a new box. I'm kinda hoping the next time someone runs into it, the box will come out unscathed.
Reply:This is our material. I think it used to be a cover of some kind
Reply:Looks good. An added advantage is when you are done, it can double as a anti tank obstacle in front of the library to stop suicide car bombers. .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Trusty sledge makes quick work of getting rid of the angle once the welds are ground down
Reply:A couple hours in and we got some usuable plate
Reply:I don't suggest to anyone to weld 1/4 inch plate with a HH140, but I got a flat on my welding trailer and this was easier than changing a tire. And for a box to hold books its plenty of welder. I will say I'm proud of the little machine. It never hit duty cycle but did trip the breaker after 40 inches of welding maxed out.

Reply:Finally got something that looks somewhat like a box. Then test fitted the old top. I was amazed when it actually fit. The tape measure gods were with me today. Don't go back til monday. Will post some more pics as work progresses.  Happy thanksgiving!Last edited by jamesyarbrough; 11-27-2013 at 07:26 PM.

Reply:Yeah hopefully it will hold up a little better than the last one!
Reply:I would love to see the next car running into it...thank god you didn't have 3/8 plate ... btw, very nice welds with this small machine and thank's for sharing
Reply:Thank you! These little welders got a bad rap around here, but this little hobart is a very nice unit! Can't wait to get back at it monday!

Reply:Nothing really went right today. Welder was running colder than normal, kept tripping the breaker. Was wishing I had a MM252 but pushed on.Ya know what they say "a grinder and paint....."
Reply:Nice ! Maybe add some roll bars , lifting hook, and wheels .  That sucker has got to be heavy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Yeah wrapping the corners with 1/4X2 angle didn't help the weight any.
Reply:Decided to make life a little easier and throw some preheat on it. It helped the little mig a lot!

Someone new to welding inevitably tries to weld a hitch on the truck with one...that's when things go south. I have (3) Lincoln 110v welders and they are great machines but they have limitations. The welder isn't welding any colder then when you were using it the other day. The problem is that you went from outside, open corner joints to fillet welds which take more juice to weld than these little machines have. Good job on the repair.
Reply:Well so far the only thing I have really had problems with has been the door. I cot one out today and by the time I got it welded up it warped on me. Never thought 1/4 would do that but live and learn. Tomorrow I will be making a new door out of 1/8 inch diamond plate because I'm all out of 1/4 but this one will get an angle iron frame!
Reply:Turns out the problem with the door wasn't anything some well placed agle wouldn't fix. Got er all finished up and primed with rusty metal primer. Hope to get it set and painted soon. Will post pics if and when that happens. Its gonna look pretty good with a slick paint job and some new decals. Thanks for looking!
Reply:looks great. Place a couple of cement colums with rebar to the left and right to make sure no one runs into it again! I'm sure it's tough, but if I was a betting man........a 2000 lb car vs a 200-300 lb box......
Reply:That idea has been brought up, although it was 6 inch pipe filled with concrete.  Really tho (to me anyway) it would be worth building another one just to see the car that hits it.
Reply:That 3/8 bolt just added MORE weight to the box.        You sure that is a book drop box and not for a NIGHT DEPOSIT BANK VAULT !
Reply:Looks good from my monitor james. Must be the nut behind the torch
