There are not price tags on anything at my LWS.  It's the only store that I have been to so I don't have another reference.  However, there was a post on another thread that referred to there not being price tags at any of the LWS's in the posters area.  When I go to exchange a cylinder, I will pick up a small item and just pay the price.  The prices seem reasonable for small business retail, but it's just kind of weird not knowing how much the item is till I get to the register.  I could always ask, but fear that I would be labeled a trouble maker and my cylinder exchange prices would double  If anybody has thoughts on this post them up.  Here's mine:1.  If you have to ask, you cant afford it.2.  The customer will pay so the business stays around for a long time.3.  You can't put a price on customer service.4.  If you need it today to make money today, you'll pay.5.  The price is different depending who you are.HarrySyncrowave 210HH140Victor O/A

Reply:I would say number 4 and 5 would be most in play, my son worked as a scraper for a few years, and they sold him things at times up to 50% less than what I would be charged as an occasional user,  (some things there is a lot of difference, and other items they have little to margin deal with)but I would suggest a on line  search,  find a product your looking for price it and figure in the shipping, and go armed with that info and if they will not match that price leave it on the counter and go home and order it,  I think the biggest mark up or margin is in consumables,If one is buying rod by the pallet I would hope they would get some better price than the guy that come in for 10 pounds a trip, for an example many years ago,  I bought my son a wire feed welder, a Hobart from Northern tool  with free shipping,  I got talking to them a few months later, and they claimed they could not have bought that welder for what I ordered it for,    some is buying power, and some is company policy,  but I think ask and arm you self with some information before hand,
Reply:I wouldn't dream of picking up a 280DX and plopping it up on the counter before asking.  hahaSyncrowave 210HH140Victor O/A

Reply:As for welding rod, when I did the high rises downtown we would buy one ton of rod for the job as a bulk order and draw from it. The price was so cheap it was amazing.

Reply:Switched LWSs recently based on cost, posted prices on ALL items, and above all else.......customer service.  Our new LWS treats us like gold.  We avail ourselves to buy all shielding gas, rods, filler, TIG/MIG components thru them.  On multiple occasions, they have matched/met presented online prices.  For example, in the market for a Flange Wizard Tool Kit (#FW 8905).  Their flyer showed an asking price of $234.  The LWS offered to us for $205.  Probably leaving $15 on the table, but the offer to reduce their "standard" price will definitely yield dividends in the long run.  Remember, client relations is a two-way street. The crew at this outfit treats us like the larger volume shops.  Blessed.  Last edited by ManoKai; 03-07-2015 at 12:48 PM."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Reply:The LWS that I go to doesn't mark prices on anything. I just bring stuff up to the counter so they can lookup the price. 99% of everything they sell, I can get cheaper on line. The only time that I buy anything from them besides gas is when I want it now,or if I can't find it on line and they have it,or if it's about the same price on line, like filler rod.I don't know about anyone else, but I like to get the best prices on what I buy.I try not to give my money away, I'm strange like that.AHP AlphaTig 200x 3rd gen.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP

Reply:Really? I've never seen anyone negotiate a lower price unless they were asking the store to match or beat another store. It's a policy at some stores if you have proof of a lower price.I work in welding supplies/industrial supplies. A lot of places put ridiculously high prices in their catalogues and on their store shelves. One place I worked used to put prices for everything on the shelves until a larger customer came in the store and saw the price on the shelf was LESS than what the salesman was selling it to him. The salesman made a big stink about it and all the prices came off. If I would have been a boss, the salesman might have been fired. That's just unacceptable to rip off a customer because you think you can get away with it. Sometimes salesman will sell certain items at a lower cost and then sell related items at a regular cost to average things out and that's OK but selling for higher than what anybody walking off the street pays is wrong. I don't why they can't put a reasonable competitive price on the shelf that people would actually pay? Then if the person has an account or is buying multiple products they get a little better price based on the volume of business they do. Putting too high a price on even a small item will scare away people from ever coming back.

Reply:Just call them up and tell them you want to buy 10 gloves, 20 boxes of that, 50 cases of this, and then say you are a big customer, they will quote you the best price off the bat.if you want to pay full price then say you just want one of each and will only shop there once every few months. almost all trade stores are like this HVAC supplies, cabinet suppliers, etc, hate haggling with them, but i've gotten good at it.
Reply:i know! i almost always go to old junk stores antique places and craigslist kind of deal! then when i go to big box stores, i always feel i am getting ripped! not at canadian tire though...!Remember a owner and worker at a welding shop has overhead and other expenses... beer! They usually have a markup, almost always! Yes all 5 are true!Last edited by IslandWeldingKid; 03-08-2015 at 12:22 PM.
