I need it to practice Stick and TIG.  They have this machine at school and it works great for Stick, but I never used it for TIG.  I'm not TIG welding aluminum, so that is why I didn't mind choosing this DC model.  I will be welding mostly steel/carbon steel pipe and flat plate.  Any help would be great guys, I'm really stuck here.1) Has anyone ever TIG welded with this machine consistently to know if it's good or not?2) Does it perform well for TIG welding?3) Is it good for practice and getting good at TIG on this machine?4) Is the Lift Arc feature acceptable as opposed to the high frequency?
Reply:i have used these machines in the refinery and they are good machines. i think they perform well in both stick and tig welding .  i am looking to get one for myself. and i dont see why lift arc wouldnt be acceptable.
Reply:Thank you for the quick reply, that is good news.  Does anyone else have any input?
Reply:x2.  Good machine for TIG or stick welding.  I worked a papermill job for ~6 months.  Half the jobsite  was accessible with a rack of CST280s and half with a different rack of XMT304s.  Job was mostly stainless TIG pipe.  The pipewelders didn't care which power supply they were using.  At one point there were ~80 pipewelders working, and I dont' remember hearing a single complaint about the equipment.  I was there doing structural welding; carbon and stainless, stick and TIG for both materials.  Love welding with XMT304s, and liked the CST280 just as much.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
