I think this problem has been creeping up on me for a while. It will run fine a while and then sputter and stall, sometimes sputter and keep running. Pulled the carb off twice and rebuilt the fuel pump. Getting plenty of fuel. Today I was welding a cutting edge on the dozer blade of my little excavator and worked the welding machine pretty hard. I'm not a real welder. Finally the Tecumseh engine cut off and I could not restart at all, checked spark and nothing. The Tecumseh OH160 has the electronic module for ignition. All the visible wiring looks OK. I read somewhere on this forum that the module is no longer available. Any ideas of things to check? What are my options on the module? Thanks in advance!
Reply:I Googled that engine ignition problem,,YEP, there is an issue, and a used $150+ old part from eBay is not the answer,,BUT, I quickly scanned through 3 or more different DIY upgrades,, so, the "FIX" is out there,,you just got to pick the one you want to try. Here is an example,, (I am not recommending, I am just showing an example)http://gardentractortalk.com/forums/...coil-ignition/This is not an uncommon issue, I just Googled "tecumseh oh160 ignition module" as a start.
Reply:I had the same symptoms with my Xmark mower .. Kawasaki 15hp engine. $15.00 ignition module, it fired right up. For parts, you can try looking up your model herehttps://www.jackssmallengines.com/ja...UvvvVTWkL9XLCvMiller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221 True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:Thanks for the replies John T and Sweet MK.I'm having inconsistent symptoms here. I let it cool down and checked the spark and it was strong and white. I started it and welded awhile, then after a half rod it stalled. I checked the spark and it was still hot. Will a weak stator cause this, breaking down after it warms up?
Reply:Update here. After pulling the flywheel and checking the wires, I bought a used OEM module off ebay that looked like it had 40 years of hard use for a mere $265. It runs great now. I didn't have the time or inclination to do the modifications, but if this one fails I probably won't have any choice. Thanks for the guidance. |
