I been researching around out here on line for a while,my first choice if my budget would of allowed was the Makita LC1230 around $440 delivered, and Makita has served me well I still am working my Makita  chop saw I bought back in around 1990. But since business isn't  booming just chugging along  I cheeped out a little and went with the Evolution thru Sears, they had it on sale for $251 and offered another 10% off  so it was $226 but after tax and shipped it was right at $271. From the photos it looks like a well made piece.Curious what the reviews are out here on the forum I haven't found much in the archives ,,,,thanks jim Attached Images
Reply:seems from comments thatthe key to happiness with these saws is to  take it easy on the (expensive) blades..dont  press em, let em cut.
Reply:Hey Jim,There should be quite a few threads regarding the dry cut saws & blades here on the forum. As far as my own personal experience, I use a Porter-Cable 1410 Dry Cut saw & use the Freud Diablo 14" C7 tungsten grade blades. I use these blades exclusively since I have tried everything on the market & these are the best IMO. They are quite reasonably priced & I will attach a link to the distributor I get mine from. I average 1200-1600 cuts before re-sharpening is needed.Blade life is determined by your usage & material being cut. I cut aluminum, CS, brass/bronze, copper, & black pipe without issue. Don't even consider SS as these blades will not take the punishment of SS. As far as thicknesses, I have cut 4" solid round with my saw, so they have the ability to be quite rugged. The pressure applied will determine blade life as it takes a bit of "feel" to let the blade do the work. Many try to "hog" cut(excessive pressure) with these saws & only damage the blades & reduce blade life. I dry cut all steel & use WD-40 when cutting aluminum as WD keeps the tungsten teeth clean & free of alum. buildup. Also, learning how to position material will extend blade life. Square, angle, & rectangular material should be positioned so the blade is cutting thru an angle & not the flats. I'm sure others will chime in & perhaps post other threads that have been discussed. Ok...here's the blade site & some pics of positioning.Dennyhttp://www.cripedistributing.com/fre...de-p-1467.html Attached ImagesComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:I have the Evolution Rage 3 miter saw and Rage 1 hand held circular saw.  The miter saw has been a good saw for me.  The circular saw I haven't used enough yet to say much.  I'm planning to some day get the Rage 2 chop saw too.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I have a rage 3, & use the multi purpose blade in it,& works great. my 14" abrasive saw sits on the shelf since purchasing the rage.                                                                  Bob
Reply:I still use my 14" abrasives saws the most for making 90* cuts.  I use the Rage 3 for making miter cuts only, which saves the blade life.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I've looked a quite a few threads about cold/dry saws, and always had a few questionsOnly sawing I do is with a plain old Makita abrasive chop saw on small tubing, angle, flat, etc.I know there's deflection in the blade, but going reasonably slow, retreating from the cut and starting over, generally gives me an acceptable cut.I don't expect the cut piece to be absolutely perfect.  Usually you take care of that in the fitup.  And relying on square edges would be sort of taking a risk anyway.  Wouldn't dream of assuming anything is square.I don't work with anything but ferrous metals.  Non ferrous is beyond my experience. So, what is the real advantage to these saws?  I don't do production work (600 cuts a day), and I wonder if the extra bucks to set up one of these things is worthwhile. And, as an afterthought..........there must be quite a bit of deflection in a metal blade too.  After all it's a large radius thin edge cutting tool."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Weld bead,,,good point ,,I try to run stuff in its sweet spot whether it be cutting or drilling it does make a difference.Yorkiepap ,,,thanks for the tips,I will be using some of your ideas. Also I been told that the material being cut has got to be clamped in good and tight or it will fly. Cripes has great deals on the blades and I have heard all good about Freud Diablo (ITALIAN) and at that price a may buy a couple to have on hand.Desert Rider,,As i mentioned Sears seems to have a great sale price on the Rage2 .Rdionne,Im hoping too that my old makita abrasive saw will be on the shelf, but i will keep it around for the rough stuff. Farmer Samm,,, 600 cuts a day!!! Thats alot of cuts,,,guess youll have to do the math, you must be going through a boat load of abrasive wheels a day?
Reply:DesertRider: Why would you want a Rage 2 when you already have a 3? I know that the 3 is a sliding compound mitre saw and the 2 i strictly a chop saw. Just wondering. By the way, thanks to all for all the good info on this site. I'm sure learning a lot.
Reply:The 14" blade size cuts bigger pieces of metal in one cut since depth of cut is limited by blade diameter.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Thanks DeseretRider, I thought of that after I posted.yorkiepap - Do you have a few of those vise adapters for different sizes of tubing? I really like that idea. One other question on the Rage. It has been said that they don't like to cut on the flat. Do they do OK if you want to cut a miter? You have to cut on a flat side then don't you?
Reply:Desertrider...do you have the standard Rage 3 or the Rage 3DB (Double Bevel)?I have the Milwaukee Dry-Cut saw and it's been great for the 5 years that I've been using it.I had been buying replacement blades from Max Tool here in California. They sell Carrera Precision Blades that worked pretty well. I thought they were fairly inexpensive until I saw the link that Denny posted...but they are local to me and I could get one in a pinch if I had to.I cut a lot of DOM mild steel tubing, cold rolled flat stock, ERW tubing, and some 4130. Obviously with these materials the blade life is diminished but I love the cut quality from the saw. After a recent project with 4130, I toasted a blade that I had a good 1000 cuts on. I decided to go back the Milwaukee Endurance blades and I purchased their 90 tooth blade that is made for cutting SS. It has offset chamfered teeth that help power through the cut and I've noticed that it runs a little quieter than the other blades when cutting. So far it's been my favorite blade but it should have come with some lube....for me. It was $160!One modification that I made to my saw about a year ago that really helps with blade life was the addition of a "misting" coolant system. I use this system on my Mill, lathe, and bandsaw and figured I would try it on my dry-cut saw. It works great. Here is the system that I use.http://www.koolmist.com/portamist_kit.htmlFarmersamm, I haven't noticed any blade deflection on my saw...the cut quality rivals that of the Scotchman cold saw that I use at work.I think the next time I get a blade I will try the ones that Denny suggested. They are much easier on the wallet than any of the others....I just wonder how they would do with the materials that I cut.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:I ordered a few of the blades Denny posted for use in my Milwaukee dry cut saw. I'm eagerly awaiting their arrival.
Reply:ZT, I don't think my Rage 3 is a DB.  It miters in both directions, bevels in one direction and slides.I get my blades sharpened at a local saw blade service shop.  I think they send them to their main shop somewhere near LA.  D&D Tool & Supply is the name of the company.   They sharpen the 10" 52-tooth blades for $15/blade.  Beats buying a new one for $60.   They sell the Tenyru brand blades there that fit the Rage 3.Which blades are the ones that Denny suggested?MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
