I am on the market for a plasma cutter. From the reviews I have read its pretty solid cutter. i would just like to get some more thoughts on it from people who have used this cutter or others, or even tell me what your chioce in plasma is if its miller, Hobart, thermal dynamics, etc.http://www.millerwelds.com/products/...m_375_x-treme/Thanks any thoughts are welcome. Josh
Reply:my plasma died and thought it was'nt going to be able to be repaird'......after a bit of research , that Miller Spectrum X-Treme was FIRST on my list for a new plasma cutter , what a beaut.  I would also / definately consider HyperTherm....there's a section on this site dedicated to them...and this guy/member "JIMCOLT" always willing to help u , even with any brand , he's a plasma wiz , makes me want to stay withim.        thermal arc 252i  -  millermatic 350P -   miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs  -   Hypertherm 1250 G3
Reply:Get a Powermax 30 and save yourself some money. Hypertherm invented plasma cutting.
Reply:Actually...if you go to the Miller site and compare specs between the 375Xtreme and the Hypertherm Powermax30......you will see that they both have similar specs......although to me the Hypertherm has some advantages! The Hypertherm has lower input current (amps), yet higher output current......also a higher duty cycle at maximum output. The Powermax30 has a new technology torch with conical flow technology...the Miller has an older technology torch....although it is produced by Hypertherm for Miller. The Hypertherm has longer leads, also has auto voltage input switching.......and the Hypertherm is usually less expensive.Jim Colt
Reply:I would pick a Hypertherm Powermax 30 or Thermaldynamics Cutmaster 39 before I chose a Miller Specturm 375 X-TREME.  Compare the specs of each and weigh results and prices of each.  More often than not the Hypertherm and Thermaldynamics units can be found at more reasonable prices.  I have not used the Powermax 30 but everything I read and hear about it makes it very appealling.  I have used the Cutmaster 39 and it was a dream in operation although a bit larger and more cumbersome unit to move around if mobility is very important.  Never had the opportunity to use the 375, of course, never had the want too.  Good luck in your decision.A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter   Victor O/A

Reply:OK, they didn't "invent" plasma cutting but they brought it to the market, first in the industrial setting and then as technology has improved and made machines smaller and more manageable brought them to the smaller shop and hobbyist. Hypertherm MAKES the miller 375, they also hold a filing cabinet full of patents on most components you can think of on plasma cutters.Bottom line...The PM30 does everything the 375 does and it is cheaper, so unless you REALLY like blue paint, get the PM30 deluxe, the only complaint I have with it is the case is pretty tight for all the stuff it comes with but it does all fit in there.
Reply:Union Carbide Corp (Dr Gage) patented the plasma cutting process in around 1957...the welding products division of Union Carbide later became Linde, then L-Tec, Now is called Esab.Hypertherm has by far the most patents related to plasma cutting technology.....and they are not likely to stop leading in the engineering and Research and Development areas.Hypertherm does not make any plasma power supplies for Miller. Hypertherm does manufacture torches for Miller......and Miller manufactures 1 power supply (the Powermax190C) for Hypertherm. All Hypertherm power supplies except the 190C are designed and manufactured in Hypertherms facility in Hanover, NH, USA.Jim Colt Originally Posted by salem747OK, they didn't "invent" plasma cutting but they brought it to the market, first in the industrial setting and then as technology has improved and made machines smaller and more manageable brought them to the smaller shop and hobbyist. Reply:I cannot complain about my Miller Spectrum 375 Extreme.  Miller consumables are available within 5 miles, any other brand and I have to go 30 to 50 miles or more.  I did check with out of town dealers but the slight difference in price did not outweigh the convenience of having consumables and support available so close to home.  I have been absolutely satisfied with my choice in plasma cutters, no regrets here.Larry "I feel for the man who cannot spell a word more than one way."  by Mark TwainLincoln AC225-SLincoln Weldpac 100 Miller Matic 180 (auto set)Miller Spectrum 375 ExtremeMiller Spoolmate 100Victor Super Range II
Reply:thanks for all the replys I read up on the hypertherm, they do cost less, and often pretty much the same thing. I have to say I like the miller more my local welding shop carries the consumables for the miller I like millers MVP plug system better then HT's little cord set. I am not holding the money just yet so i still have time to do more reading and try to find more info from HT.2-Lincoln idealarc 250/250, lincoln 225 ac/dc welder, lincweld ac 180c, hobart handler 210, hobart stickmate lx 235/160, Hypertherm Powermax30local 26 I.B.E.W Electrician
