OK, so it's not Eric Snowden but it does make ya wonder where all those inches are going. WAHT IS BIG BUSINESS HIDING? DOES IT REACH ALL THE WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE. IS THE KREMLIN INVOLVED. PERHAPS THE CHINESE?Earlier today I was wondering about alp0hanumeric methodology Lincoln employs in divvying up power and wire for my 180. IPM wire feed rate as opposed to numbers or digital readout. My Lincoln has A-E and 1-10. So out came the tape measure and the iPhone stopwatch and I came up with 6" at 1 for 10 seconds no matter if the voltage was A or E and 54" for 6 seconds at 10, again irrespective of whether the tap was set to A or E. Multiply these real world numbers by 10 for a full 60-second run and you have 50 at the 1 setting and 540 at the 6 setting. So I look at the Lincoln site to see what they say about voltage at the taps and discover numbers ranging from 50-500 IPM for the 1-10 stops. Maybe it was the unscientific standards I used. Maybe it was the tape measure missing the first foot and a half. Maybe it was the MGD I drank before commencing the labwork. Or maybe there was a guy on the grassy mole across the plaza, I don't know but it does make you wonder; Where'd the extra inches come from? Inquiring minds want to know. I'm just trying to extrapolate IPM out of Lincolns alphanumeric settings.

Reply:Here again, I think you're putting way too much thought into this! Over my career as a professional welder I can't tell you how many welders I've seen run off because of too many trips back to the welding machine to get it set. It should only take 2 to 3 attempts at most to have the machine dialed in, and then making money for the company! If you lollygag around too long they'll get someone else to do your job! Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:It really doesn't matter in his case. But guys who weld for a living, time is money. Don't ever kid yourself, foreman / owners all watch the clock!Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Loose drive wheels and spool tensioner equals more wire. Tight drive wheels and tight spool tensioner equals less wire. If you handle your wire with MGD prior to the test, there is a longer lasting aftertaste and slower wire. Chinese super slick equals less drag in the noodle toob equals more wire. Course point the torch up and more gravity, versus torch down and earth's magnetic core pulls wire out faster. Long torches requires more chinese super slick to increase speed ratcheting at the contact tip. Dang, I need to lay off the MGDs and return to the Keystone lights.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Typos- Yeah ... that's the ticket! I'm know for that!!! As for over-thinking, you're right on that too. I'm lucky because i don't have a boss looking at the clock. I just wonder things; stupid things that really make no difference in the real world like why the sky is blue or can a fly fly 400 MPH if he's not in an airplane. But the explanations help me understand the core of the issue. Thanks again so much for the replies. Gotta go do horse things and modify a trailer to a flatbed.

Reply:Transformers are a ratio of input to output. Change the input and the output is gonna change too. So 217 VAC input at one guys house and 242 VAC input at another guys house equals different everything on the out put side."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Thanks Sandy. I hadn't thought of that.
