HelloHello,I have query on WPS qualification for SMAW Process.I am going to weld ASTM A 572 Gr 50 material with E7018 electrode.1) As per ASME Section IX, Clause QW -203,Unless specifically required otherwise by the welding variables (QW-250), a qualification in any position qualifies the procedure for all positions. The welding process and electrodes must be suitable for use in the positions permitted by the WPS. Secondly as per ASME Section IX, for WPS qualification, position is not essential variable. Does it mean for a particular material, if I have qualified WPS by 1G position then same WPS can be used for production welds of 2G,3G,1F,2F positions provided welding process and Electrodes are suitable for the positions. 2) As per AWS D 1.1 code, for WPS qualification, position is essential variable. As per Table 4.1 , if I performed WPS qualification for 3G position, then this WPS gets qualified for only vertical butt and fillet welds. Does it mean, if my production weld is in 1G position, then I cannot use this WPS qualified by 3G Position ?3) As mentioned in point no1 and no2,between the two codes, why there is so much difference regarding WPS qualification ?Regards,Santosh PAWAR
Reply:1) Yes2) Yes3) Uhhhhhhhhhhhh, don't know. Difference in potential stress applied to the welds?
Reply:Is one code structural and one is pressure piping? I know all the vessel shops up here go by ASME codes. 6G usually covers all positions.
Reply:Hello allThanks for your reply. Regards |
