Flattening tubing?

How would one go about flattening the end of round tube?  I am thinking about using a bottle jack and just building something i have pictured in my head.  Would i need to pre-heat the end of the metal tubing, and if so what is the best way to do that?  Thanks for your help.

Reply:I have never flattened tubing before, is it that easy?  It will be about 1/16 - 3/32 in thickness.
Reply:Depends on the size of the vise. I crushed some 4" of 3/4" EMT  flat the other day to make a fast spare marker stick for the plow. I used the 8" bench vise at the shop and had no issues crushing it flat with the 1/2" pex inside.I've crushed pipe in the shop press when needed, and heated it with a rosebud and pounded it flat with a mallet on concrete for an emergency repair in the field..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I use a small press with a bottle jack to flatten sch 40 pipe up to 2". I find quicker  than fish mouthing for my purposes. I'll post a pic tomorrow.
Reply:I use a flattening die and the press brake.   But i have used a BFH 20lb'er in the field in a pinchVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:Have you considered cutting saddles? It really ain't that hard. With a little practice you can do it in seconds.
Reply:yeah.. lay the porta band on the pipe, and let it nip a bit off.. flip and do the other side..if you're not livin on the edge, you're takin up too much room..
