Hi all.I've been welding hard facing for 23 years now. Work is slow & I'm laid-off. All of my experience is with stoody wire in flat position. Stoody is really drippy so flat is really the only way to go. Nevertheless, I have a 2g .064 metal core test tomorrow for a structural steel job. Not very confident that I'll pass but have to try. What advice could you all give me? Hints? Tips? Thanks in advance!
Reply:Good fit up and clean steel will start you off in the right way not sure of the machine settings but someone else could help you. do you know the brand of wire your using? they usually have a weld parameter chart.Lincoln pro core 125 14''chop saw7 inch grinder,2-4.5 inch grinders, electric die grinder.Half inch drillAnd alot of hand tools
Reply:Good luck on the test. It sounds like you need to talk to someone who has welded with metal cored wire and preferably in 2g, so they could describe weld and puddle characteristics and how it may differ from Stoody. Used to be you could call AWS on their 800 line and get welding advice over the phone, but I don't know if they still do that. I did see some metal cored wire videos on youtube, maybe that would help if you could see it in action.Good luck with it- take your best shot- hope you get the job!
Reply:Never used it before. A quick search says it's spray transfer...To me that says "EASY" all over it. Don't stress it. , he shows the difference between short arc and spray transfer, etc. But you will get a good idea.
Reply:Puddle is more fluid, runs in spray transfer, i turn the wire speed down since it is high deposition at least that works for me; at work we use Metal-Cor 6Millermatic 200Linde 295 Amp Stick90 Amp Flux-Core
Reply:I use 1/16 metalcore Lincoln MC-6 with 85/15 at work but not often in the 2g position. I will give my 2 cents for where I think the settings should be; start at ~24.7v and ~205 ipm. I have not had to pass a test in the 2g position but in the 1g position I find it easy to pass. The fill rate of metal core is pretty high and can be a little intimidating if you are used to stick or fluxcore so mind your puddle. The puddle is very fluid so allow a little cool time between passes. I feel that you should not have too much trouble with this.hope this helpsbrad
