My SA200 needed an alternator when the original generator died.I used the old brackets to make the new ones. Then I made a battery door and holder (the battery was just sliding around in there before). The old upper bracket and one of the ears I cut off the lower bracket.Welded together:The old lower bracket with the right ear cut and moved near the middle. The left ear replaced with one that goes up and further left to clear the lower water hose.Used the lathe and made a spacer out of an old bolt.Painted up A few more to come next post.Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Installed pics - you can see why the angle piece had to be added. I also added some length that way.Battery holder - I bent 1/4" round bar, threaded both ends and used lock nuts.Battery door - for the upper slot I just drilled the big hole and two end holes - connected with a jig saw and file.Pretty simple stuff but I like how they turned out Dave J.Last edited by MinnesotaDave; 09-29-2013 at 12:51 AM.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:Great job. I like how you did the battery door/holder as "original equipment" design. Most folks think the battery is supposed to sit on the battery box floor but that's why they rust out as they do.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Nice job Dave, don't you just love when you take your time making something, paint it all up nice and then scratch the heck out of it on the installation LOL, good job!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:Looks good.I've done a few Delcotron-to-Continental refits... but I don't recall having to space the lower ear away from the block, like that.Does it tuck the alternator's top in tighter, or something?Last edited by denrep; 09-29-2013 at 02:45 PM.
Reply:Denrep - I actually just used the spacing the old bracket had and "eyeball checked" it - seemed to work so I ran with it When it's stuff for me I use my calibrated eyeball as much as a tape measure and planning Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Good job!I've done a a couple of generator to alternator conversions (2 International Cubs and a Big Mo 500). The brackets are the worst part.Personally, I can't stand the GM one-wire. I go with an unregulated alternator (or rip out the failed one) and a cheap copy of the Chrysler VR-125 electronic regulator.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A
Reply:Hey thanks This is only my second GM one wire deal. The other is on my Allis Chalmers. Is there a benefit to doing it with the unregulated version?Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:I tear out the failed factory regulator and connect the brushes to wires that leave the case. That allows connecting both sides of the fields (rotor) to whatever circutry is appropriate.

Reply:Anyone have part numbers for the gm or other alternators that are cheap but reliable? |
