Hey, everyone!!Just thought I'd stop by and share one of my latest series' with yall, I figured it might benefit a few folks here.As the title of this thread implies, it's a 5 part series with 3 additional videos designed to take someone with little or no SMAW experience through some basic skill-building excersizes to being able to weld in the flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions... Here's part one:The optional (but highly recommended) homework... Watch this video on identifying problems with welds and correcting them:Part Two:Part Three:Optional (but highly recommended) lesson on 6010 and 6011:Last edited by Lanse; 12-19-2013 at 12:00 PM.[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:Part Four:The above pretty much just directs you to this video, the vertical up lesson. I decided to refer people to this video, instead of attempting to re-create it just for this series:Part Five:Wow, I know that's a lot of videos... But yeah, that's the at-home course I put together for y'all. Hope you enjoy it, and happy welding everyone  [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:I just came across your videos the other night and subscribed, you do a good job for the most part with your videos.  I say for the most part because my only suggestion is rather than fast forward through you unbolting your bumper or grinding metal, just cut that part out lol.

Reply:Thanks for the feedback!I've taken this into consideration, however most people's opinions of the "fast-forward" are positive... And personally, I like it better than:>Now we're gonna do this>There, it's done>Now we're gonna do that>There, it's doneSo, for these reasons I'm not changing anything right now. But thanks for watching [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009

Reply:I came across your videos about a year ago. I love em', I always seem to learn something every time I watch one. Keep up the good work "ChuckE2009"!!!!Proverbs 4:23My company welds.
Reply:Agreed.  I really enjoy your videos Lanse.  I subscribed a few months back and look forward to each new release.  I've gone back and watched most of your project builds.  I kinda like that the videos are raw and unpolished.  And I can relate to your speaking style (that being said.  Lol).  I think your shop is probably more representative of the average user than some of the real high-end shops that appear in instructional videos.  Some future vids I'd like to see you do is maybe some more detailed vids about using flux-core.  Aside from an old tombstone that a lot of people inherit I think a lot of beginners start with flux core due to the low cost.  Also maybe a video showing three different stick beads ran on dcen, dcep, and AC.   You've stated you prefer using dcep for most stick welding but I've not found any videos showing side by side beads and/or varying levels of penetration.Overall great job and I enjoy your series.
Reply:I like the fast forward. Tv magic sucks. I like to see the work...but thats just me.as far as the channel goes, I really like it. I get lots of ideas from the builds and one video in particular helped me out a lot. The vertical Z weave vid was awesome. I was only taught stringers in school so it was a learning experience.  that video along with a bunch of help from some guys here really got me headed in the right direction on my "learning to pipe weld at home" experiment.
Reply:Love your videos, my three year daughter loves to watch "Chuckie" as well.   I thought you got divorced from Longevity?
Reply:I've always wondered where "ChuckE2009" came from?
Reply:Lanse.   Thanks for posting.  I've watched about every video that you've posted on you tube, many of them more than once.  I've learned a ton.  I think you do a great job, you're good at explaining what the goal of the video is, and you're a good teacher.I think if you upgraded your audio, like a better microphone, you videos would be better overall.  If you're using the on camera mics, then you won't get good audio. I know, "oh great, something else to buy", but just a suggestion.Keep it up.

Reply:Lanse,I really appreciate your videos! I inherited an oxy/acetylene torch set and a stick welder last spring and your videos have been a great help. Well done and easy to follow even for a novice like me. I've watched them more than once and my welding is getting pretty decent.I don't mind the fast forward thing. I actually didn't realize it was fast forward, I just thought you must drink an awful lot of caffeine.
Reply:Originally Posted by musickbcThanks for that. Don't know why I've always wondered. I figured it had something to do with your name or a nickname or something. Keep up the good work on the videos! Hit me up when you come to TX and we can grab a beer or something.Brian
Reply:Hey Lanse like all the others have said thanks for all your work and effort you put into these. Reply:On the overhead weld, you have a crater at the start and mess at the stop. The way to fix that is for starting the weld, strike an arc an inch away from where you want to start, then carry the arc over to where the start will be and build up the metal. Run the rest of the bead as normal, when you come up to the stop, start to go slightly forehand, pushing metal to the edge, pause for a little bit of build up, then start coming back overtop of your weld for about 1". that should build up a good stop without a hole or mess or anything, and won't leave a crater or nothing.

Reply:I follow both your channels closely, and I watched the video and I don't see the resemblance. Travis sais he treats youtube like its theatre which is why he said he was wearing a crown in the one video. He sais hes wearing a condom on his head and spongebob t shirt because it would make the video more funny than just normal clothing.  I've asked him about it reading the comments, as well as asking different things on other videos...but he sais that he remembers things when he started in the trades that he incorporates into the videos, which is where the "I think theres something wrong with my machine" he sais comes from and the 'my lenses were fogged up".. he mentioned about the welding helmet that the new welders in 1st and 2nd year where he went to school talk highly about autolens helmets, but he sais hes very bias towards auto lens helmets because they have a stigma attached to it. Asked him why he doesn't like structural welding and he said its because when he was a welders helper, the welder pointed out another welder welding and said he couldn't pass xrays and that's why he's welding structural. Asked him why he doesn't like certain welding machines and he said he doesn't like Vantages, doesn't like trailblazers or rangers, but would choose a trailblazer over a vantage. He sais its because they remind him of a dodge neon while the old sa200's remind him of muscle cars.  Asked him why he is saying "check this out youtube" and he said he was on a western Canadian rig welders group and had talked about purge moniters, and would get attacked because one of the members said "Because you are teaching youtube how to weld" when he thought it was because he had a titanium ticket when the other welders didn't, and because they thought he was reading articles when he would answer questions He said he shows the weld because he had a welder out one time who saw an older welding video of his and the guy thought he was brand new to welding and a jokester but was impressed with the result and started following more videos, and he said typically the welder when hes talking and doing the demonstration, that it builds the person up and that if the result is poor then he loses his credibility. He said he shown the weld because he wanted to convey that the weld was top notch quality even though the viewer watching would disagree. So I don't see the resemblance. Guys are probably quick to attack and say theres a resembleance or whatever because there are only like 5 actual welding channels. Mr Tig, Chucke2009,WEldingtips&tricks, kevin caron, fieldres. And look at all the channels - they all do tool reviews, all do machine reviews - they're all welding related.I don't see the resemblance.
Reply:I don't see the resemblance.  I don't know Thorton, but from what I have seen of him, if he were to parody you, he wouldn't deny it.  I would take this video for what it is....fun.  If you want it to be your parody, I suppose you can ask him to attribute it to you.  I wouldn't break my arm just yet.
Reply:thats funny. first thing I thought of was lanse. but when I read the comments I figured it was just coincidence

Reply:duane, his test are worthless except for entertainment value.  if he wants to add real value to his tests then they need to be measurable and repeatable, but then again, I have mentioned this ad nauseam.   He is a good videographer and entertaining to watch.  I do like how he captures the arc and puddle on camera...better than most.

Reply:Depends o. Who is swinging the hammer. I know some guys that could break those t welds with one swipe and other who couldn't break it if they had to. Not the most precise testing. Nothing to keep variables the same. Maybe a free falling weight from the same height to keep the energy of the blow the same would make the tests more valid. Just my opinion. Could show slag inclusions but that's about it

Reply:Originally Posted by GerryM.I don't think his tests are worthless, the BFH test is a valid test for how well/abuse it will take before it breaks. It's called field testing, hit 2 or 3 times with the BFH and if it don't break, it's good to go.

Reply:I don't put any stock in the hammer test either.First it presupposes the weldor can make equal quality welds with various rods that they do not use on a regular basis. If that can't be assured, nothing that follows is valid.Last edited by MinnesotaDave; 01-02-2014 at 08:36 PM.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:I'm not a fan of the hammer test either, but it is good for learning. I prefer a long lever that slips over the edge of the T-joint, secure the other side of the joint and pull. If you wanted to you could measure the force required to bend the joint. Reply:A hammer test is better than no test.  I'm not sure everything has to be quite so black and white. I'd say a hammer test may not always be definitive but there have to be times when it is. If I give something one whack and it goes flying across the room that says a lot to me. It may not give you any numerical strength rating but it does say it was no pharking good."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

I would seriously suggest investing in or building a coupon bender to properly & accurately test your welds. Maybe you already have one, I don't recall seeing it tho. my apologies if I missed it.Without a consistent, repeatable way to do this, it's a guess at best. Kind of the same way as trying to accurately calibrate a welding machine without a load bank. Without a specific resistive load applied to the machine, it's almost impossible to track & record correct measure of output.Just figure if a BFH was an acceptable means & method of destructively testing welds, the AWS would be using it instead of guided benders. Only a suggestion I do enjoy watching you at your work tho!! Hell, maybe you can find someone to let you demo one
Reply:Originally Posted by CEPYes it did. But you could have knock me over with a feather when the fillet weld broke with only 3-blows. You also have to remember I was swinging a 4-pound hammer, and I'll guarantee you I've swung more hammers than Lanse has to date.
