Grinding mig welds so you have a clean cornerHi all,Got a job where i need to grind some mig welds, They are putting some 1mm stainless steel cladding onto some staircase stringers and the 15mm fillet welds at the top and bottom stringers need to be cleaned so the stainless fits right to the corners. Don't worry its a full penetration weld so removing the fillet won't weaken it too much. Plus it only need to be don on one side of the stringers. But although i can get to a certain amount ground off with a 4" grinder i can get right into the corners, i've used so far..1. Drills2. Carbide burrs3. Countersink bitThe weld is so hard i just can't seem to grind or cut into it, i had thought about using the gas bottles but i'm worried that i'll go over the top and either weaken the weld or damage the glass balustrade which has already been fitted. Can anyone come up with any ideas or what worked for you?

Reply:A straight die grinder and a carbide burr. Watch the shavings. They will be sharp. Dan D

Reply:I have a project that I have the same problem on. I too have tried everything. The only thing I can think of left to do is use a very sharp cold chisel to cut right in to the corner. Good luck!  From now on I will only weld outside corners if possible! Weld On!

Reply:Get a sharper carbide burr and a better die grinder. It should take you less than 10 minutes per tread to do that.
Reply:I think thats gonna be the way to go,What shape of carbide burr would you recommend Walker?
Reply:Try a mini hand belt sander, a new straight taper carbide burr will do it but make thin passes Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk
Reply:Arc gouger and a crapload of fire blanket?
Reply:Carbide burr, dynabrade, Grinding stone on a straight air grinder. If you are real good, a torch and a scarfing tip. I have in similar situations used a sawzall and CAREFULLY!! nibbled away at the weld. Looks like a last minuet design change. Dont you just LOVE that sh!t? Good luck man.If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience.
