A buddy of mine was going to buy a set of luggage boxes for his Buell Ulysees. I thought the concept was cool until he told me they were $1400. WTH??? After a little coaxing, I talked him into us building them. After $100 in .100 aluminum, a 6 pack of Guinness and a little Jamisons 12yr, and an afternoon heres what we had. Thoughts please!!! Reply:I think your $100+ in the hole by the pictures since I don't see anything in them. $1300 more to go.
Reply:They look much sturdier than the commercial ones. Nice job.ChrisAuction Addict
Reply:They are terrible.  You will have to come to my house and build another set to get it right.  Let me know when you are free.Great job.  Locks?
Reply:not trying to insult you or your work. if you were making a point ok but they kind of spoil the look of the bike.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Looks good. The frame looks sleek enough that it will look ok when the boxes are off. How hard are they to remove when not needed?

Reply:You didn't see the part about the Jameson and Guiness. Square HOLDS more cans at the correct angle. Quit being silly and read the entire post! Reply:I tried to talk him into angles, swooped rear and even plasma cutting the Buell logo in the side then backing it with aluminum. He wasnt having any of it. After reading a bit, it seems to be a cult thing for this group of motorcyclists thats called "adventure riders". Everything is square and as aerodynamic as a brick. Some of these guys are doing the same thinh using old 20mm ammo cans. They mostly ride BMW's or a jap version of a half enduro half touring bike.  He sent me the pics of similar boxes he was going to buy but his wife was upset they were $1400. After looking at the ad he sent me I called him and said, " You realize thats just an aluminum box right"? They come off very easy. The inside has a twist lock. Once you unlock it, they drop right off. My friend put a latching system on but he hasnt sent me a pic of it yet. I will update when he does. It was a fun day. Me welding and him heckling me from the backround about how long it takes to TIG weld. Finally I made him my "Beer Assistant".RG_______________________Hobart 187Northern Tool Plasma 375Harris 85 O/A Rig (Ireland)

Reply:I've seen several bikes around town with similar looking panniers - does seem to be the style.  Maybe its the equivalent of a lot of the bumpers that have sharp, angry angles - meant to look rugged.I have considered making a pair with a few beads rolled all the way around, then have a bent radius at all 4 corners.  That might not be as impact resistant as the rectangular shape, I suppose though.Miller Dynasty 200 DXMiller CP-300 with 30A feederHypertherm Powermax 900Oxy-fuel w/Harris torchesScotchman Glide-in bandsawMonarch 10EE latheEmi-Mec Autoturn latheDeckel FP2NC milling machinePro-Tools 105 Bender
