In the off season we raise trout in the empty marina spaces in 9'x11'x11'deep pens. I built them originally wit 200'x4' 1"x1" 16 ga galv plastic coated fence. Once nicked, or chewed on by a predator, it rusts and rots away, allowing trout to escape or otters to get in. This winter I need to rescreen these probably with a stainless 1"x1"x16 or 14 ga mesh. There is a lot of labor in pulling them and redoing the screen, so I want it to last. Does anyone have a source for stainless mesh, I need 24 -100' x4' rolls of the stuff. Attached Images

Reply:Yes, Howard is good but their pricing might be off-key. Wire mesh is one of the products the Chinese are hosing the US with (predatory pricing) so prices bounce all over the place. I'm not sure which stocks Howard is making on their own still and which they have busted down and imported because you can't compete with someone who is intentionally trying to put you out of business by pricing below market value. I quoted some very heavy stainless material from Howard a while back and got my *** kicked by someone quoting 1/3 the price in Chinese crap (and my markup was very small).Lots of other wire cloth manufacturers also so there is likely one in your general area. It'd be wise to get 3 quotes on this stuff. In any case, Howard have always been good people to deal with.
Reply:There is a company in Illinois called McNichols that I have dealt with before. I don't know how their current prices compare but they may be worth a look.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:why cant you use a heavy plastic or pvc mesh? it will never rust and cost would be alot better...Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...

Reply:Two layers isn't worth it. It gets heavy, the plastic doesn't do a thing against otters, and like you mentioned it traps more stuff and is harder to clean. We have bought our screen from McNichols a few times. The screen is never the "same stuff as before" and as mentioned the price is always different. Although it has been more than a few years since we bought screen. We have been having more trouble finding a good company that supplies seine nets.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829

Reply:how about galvanized fencing mesh? even if nicked only the area that was nicked would rust, unlike plastic coated once opened up the water can run inside the coating..what kind of trout do you raise?Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...

Reply:thats pretty cool!! except for the otter issue...the fish farm by me upstate has all above ground pools for the fish, alot more filtering than that set up...Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...
Reply:We may do above ground pools where the water is already cold, below the dam. As of now the pen design gets to warm in the summer for trout. I wanted to experiment with other pan fish, but they would take a smaller mesh, more algae scrubbing, and I am old they don't do well, they start attacking each other. A lot of the above ground farms are going out of business due to drought. Fish and game won't be doing fish for several years because they were sued and forced to raise only triploid (sterile) fish so they don't compete with salmon. Pretty ridiculous law, since their purpose is to help fish and game grow….Last edited by blackbart; 03-28-2015 at 06:16 PM.
