Reply:I think what a lot of people get confused about in regards to say 220V @ 50 amps, is that there are two "hot" wires on a 220 circuit.  Each "hot" wire is 50 amps.  This does not equal 100 amps.  These are two different 50 amp circuits.  On a 110V @ 50 amp circuit, there is only one "hot" wire at 50 amps.
Reply:Power (Watts or Volt Amps) is not measured in amps.  Current flow is measured in amps. Are you asking about the input power to your welder or the setting for output to the work?50 Amps at 220 volts is twice the power as 50 Amps at 110 volts.I offer three choices: Good, Fast, & Cheap. Reply:Originally Posted by SpEdYes, in reference to stick welding. If I was smarter I likely could have phrased that question better. Let me try again. I'm using a 220 and a 110 welder both set at 50 amps. Using the same rod will they weld the same thickness of steel, or will the 220 be able to weld a thicker piece of steel? On one hand I'm a real rank amateur at this so I apologize for all the confusion.   On the other hand I am having an absolute blast learning how to weld and really appreciate everyone's help here.
Reply:In that case (output).  50 amps is 50 amps.  Or at least it should be.  A 220 v welder may have a bit better quality arc, but that really depends on the machine. My name's not Jim....

Reply:On the output, 50 Amps is 50 Amps.  HOWEVER, not all welders have the same kiloWatt output capability.  Big old welders could manage 40 arc Volts to try and get to rated current output in a bind. Lightweight welders cannot. There is no substitute for raw power. It takes power to get it going and energy to get it all melted together."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
