I've been considering wielding as a career for a little while, and I'm wondering if you guys can point in the right direction if it's a good choice for me or not. What attracts me to it is the idea of being able to do something that lets me zone out for a while and think about things while not worrying about human interaction for long periods of time. On the other hand though, I'm sometimes a careless person, I forget things, don't always do things perfectly right. Do you think those would be big problems if I pursued wielding as a career ?
Reply:If long periods without human interaction is the goal, but you are a careless person, then safety is a problem.Try stocking shelves at 4am instead - safer for your coworkers.A careless person should not be on any construction site of any kind.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:All types of welding is being done in industry. You might find production welding well suited to your personal traits. Welding is a hand skill and the only way you will know if you are suited is to try it. Half an hour practicing under someone's guidance will give you an idea. There are jobs where you rarely talk to anyone and you weld joint after joint after joint, all day long, all month long all year long, all decade long. Production welding often has low standards and does not pay as much the type of welding where the people have to be thinking about the job all the time. I keep thinking about one guy who did nothing but structural welding flat and horizontal for many years. I am sure if I went back to that shop he would still be standing at those horses welding everything that the crane operators dropped in front of him. If carelessness and lack of quality is your byline... take a look at a garbage container sometime. That kind of welding needs speed and nothing else.
Reply:You should have the ability to spell "welding" first. Next, you need to have your mind focused on what you're doing. You forget a step, you kill someone. You need to be consistent... Every single time.

Reply:What are you wielding... a gun? Nobody can tell you if welding is a good career for you just like no one can tell you if being a salesman is a good career for you. You have to decide what you want to do. How old are you?
Reply:It sounds like you would make a good landscaper.

Reply:Career choices are kinda like clothing ===it's nicer if they fit the person. Sometimes you even have to try them on 1st. Reply:Professional video game player, comes to mind...yaknow at the level where they wear that goofy looking virtual headgear and totally zone out and disconnect from dealing with people...Young man, consider welding a skill ALL young men should learn to at least functional levels if you plan to work in industry...Add it to your resume, but don't think it'll alone pay the house note...might turn out it does, but helps to have other skills where welding really compliments your total skillset.
Reply:Reminds me of a call I got a few years ago while I was at work about 3AM....It was from young guy 50 miles away...God knows how he got the number to my boiler plant, but he called. He stated he was in counseling and had been advised that he should seek a job where he worked alone and there was tons of time for him to sorta veg out......That he didn't get along well with others, but wanted to make decent bucks. The kid was serious!, And I asked him where he got the idea that utility plant operators were the hermit types and sought out seclusion.....He stated his HS career counselor suggested it and asked if we had any openings, LOL!...and I say, sure, we get them, gimme your contact info and I'll call you......Seeing as how us operators selected all candidates, at least we had an idea WHO to exclude when his ap showed up in the stack.
Reply:The truth is, once you really learn to weld, you can let your mind wonder, and still make quality welds.Have you ever driven somewhere, and not really remembered the entire trip? You have peoples lives in your hands there, too, but all of us allow our minds to wander while driving.I can sit and do leatherwork for hours, and never think about the carving and stamping. It is good therapy.I think whether you can actually weld, will be more of a determining factor, than anything else.Being a good daydreamer doesn't NECESSARILY make you a good candidateHobart Beta-Mig 2511972 Miller AEAD-200LEMiller 250 TwinNorthern Ind. Reply:I think welding is the perfect career for someone who cant spell or use punctuation. Nobody on the job site will give a hoot if you cant write a novel.
Reply:Ease up guys, "wielding" is a legit word....maybe Google misdirected him here.In fact, the act of "wielding" by unsociable people is common.....As in, "the killer was wielding an axe, the shooter was wielding an AR-15, or a knife".Oh, and, "the welder was wielding his welding torch in a threatening manner screaming he was gonna weld up the butt cracks of those that attempted to wield authority over him"
Reply:one of the basic requirements for a welder is a size 18 neck and a 3 hat. so who needs spelling?i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Maybe see if any of your friends has a welder and will let you lay a few beads?
