Miller TB301 on the F-350, Lincoln SA-250 on a trailer, and an SA-200 sitting in the barn. No plasma, just a Victor 315 torch on the truck ans an old Purox at home.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Always have work for some one. I have done some free lance work in a variety of ways. To those of yopu who are good welders and can run a profitable buisness, you have my admiration. To all who makes a living chasing the puddle and doing the job right whether you work for someone else or your self: Stand Proud.

Reply:I have my own shop, for about 18 years.  I work, sometimes, as an employee, for a contracted amount of time.  When not an employee, I work in my shop, doing whatever I can.I jokingly compare myself, to a "Call-girl."  I have to perform, flawlessly, on short notice, based on a phone call, all hours of the day or night, typically for people that will F*ck you every chance they can.  (Not everyone is like that, though.)I can't complain, too much.  Even with the "Muslim take-over" at the White House, I still, barely have my head above water.-RhynoZERO Chinese CRAPThroughout the year.....As high as 120 hrs a weekAs low as 0 hrs a weekMy brain is always working and sometimes, keeps me awake at night.Last edited by Rhyno; 04-02-2010 at 03:29 PM.07 Fowler 200D65 RedFace04 Miller TB 302, 22hpMiller 12RCMiller HF 251-1Lincoln SP135HyperTherm PM 380and a few others... Reply:I haven't been here long, got no right to speak really... and I never owned a welding shop.  But I did own a big music shop. for many years. In music shops it is all TUBE amps and like welders there are great ones like the SA 200 is here. So it's just to chase the dream maybe? ... U either want a welding shop, a music shop, a gun shop, hot rod shop,  a sports shop, RC models are nice to work on and sell too etc etc...Do U see a pattern here?  Small town America with knowledgable craftsmen working on US made quality things they dearly love supported by US manufacturers who care.  I retired because huge box stores were beginning to sell cheap Chinese crud with the name FENDER on it and cutting my gross in the process... it was and is junque.  Meanwhile Fender had no use for a guy who could repair any guitar, any amp tube or solid state  (I was a Gold level factory authorized Tech). Also I  could help a customer become a pretty darned good musician with good US made gear i.e be in a BAND. To Fender  I was small potatoe$, so I  took my potatoe$$$ and went home Their loss maybe, especially since the box stores are doing poorly right now, aw gee tuff!  IF I had a welding shop I'd think hard, and manufacture/fabricate something useful to my local community and SELL it at a good but fair price from the shop. I'd stamp MADE IN U.S.A. on it. Just an idea to boost a li'l $.enjoy,Last edited by PapaLion; 04-02-2010 at 09:39 PM.Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:Except for 2 years when I went back to college, I have always made a living as a welder. When I was younger, I did machine build/installations for the wood products industry. Lots of traveling, lots of overtime. Now I work in a large shop. No traveling….. by choice. The field-service engineer hits me up on a regular basis. Tells me he can get me a big raise and all the overtime I want. He never speaks of the down-side thoughWhen our shop is rockin, it's friggin rockin. 50 to 70 hours easy.Right now we are definitely NOT rockin. The welders and assembly guys are getting 40 but some of the machinists and electricians are working 30sHowever, the "shop" is not my only source of income. I have always been a workaholic/toolaholic and squeeze side jobs in when I can.Thermal Arc portable welder, Lincoln LN-25 feeder, Miller WC-24 weld control/Miller spool gun, Victor O/A set-up, lots of other stuff.  .Will
