Why use stick welder vs Mig welderpower max 45miller 180matco 160 hobart beta mig IIthermal dynamics pch 20Lincoln Idealarc tig 300/300 code 8167-c
Reply:Mig will never replace stick/arc welding. Stick is stronger then mig. Everything I think need the extra gets stick welded. Mig is faster but you give up some strength.www.georgesplasmacuttershop.comPlasma Cutter and Welder Sales and Repairs--Ebay storeTec.Mo. Dealer Consumables for the PT and IPT torch's
Reply:Mig is faster. Stick is simple/cheap to setup. Stick is harder to learn to control. Fast/easy to change electrode type with stick welding. Mig (solid wire) has to be gas shielded, wind can ruin welds. They both have a place.. Reply:I always hear that stick is stronger and better than mig. I want to know is this a myth or true, and if so why? Thanks Brian  I understand the conditions statement, but I work in a shop almost alwayspower max 45miller 180matco 160 hobart beta mig IIthermal dynamics pch 20Lincoln Idealarc tig 300/300 code 8167-c
Reply:Log truck comes in. 2 foot of snow on top of the logs, now melting and raining under the truck. Broken, wet, rusted, dirty what ever part under the truck needs to be welded so driver can finish his day. I am not reaching for the mig.
Reply:We just got a 250 Amp (+) stick welder with 100 foot leads for $350.  What would a similar MIG setup cost and what about the ergonomics?  Strap a bottle and a wire feeder to your back?"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:What isn't rusted  around my place is likely magnetized or both . Also corrals don't go to the shop to get out of the wind well .  Not saying i wouldn't have a place for a mig setup , but its down the priority list a ways . Good chance ill set up to scratch tig  off my portable before i bother with a mig setup .
Reply:Each process has it's placeand it has a lot to do with the machine or power supply ..a small 120 volt mig will never do what high powered migs canSame goes with stick machinesThere is a world of difference in machines of 100 amp output and machines capable of 300 plus amp outputBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:Originally Posted by BurpeeNo need if you already TIG..... you can O/A and probably to perfection.
Reply:Stick ? MIG ? TIG ? Like stated , they all have their place. That's why they make so many machines. I've done welds weld all you could get in there was a stick. That was even rough. In shop bench welding with mig is nice. Mig on thin metal is much easier then stick and does a neater job. You gotta have at least one of each machine . Not to mention a engine drive to use as a back up power source too.
Reply:Originally Posted by SquirmyPug I was just joking, I knew what you meant by the statement. I would really like to OA weld if I can get a good torch though..

Reply:I have been welding for 30+ years. Mostly as a body man. I was the first in the state of texas to pass the welding test on cars. It is scary how many people lay a weld not penetration. But I believe and have tested my welds by ripping them apart in very light steel on cars to heavy steel projects. I can watch and manipulate the puddle and move to molten metal around in the puddle.power max 45miller 180matco 160 hobart beta mig IIthermal dynamics pch 20Lincoln Idealarc tig 300/300 code 8167-c
Reply:i think they both have there benefits. i myself work at a dump trailer manufacturer mig welding steel and aluminum . i went to school for welding 6 years ago and can also stick and tig weld. i can personally can tell from some of the welds that others put down who can actually weld and do other process's and who can just mig weld or think they can .  but in my opinion to be a good mig welder you must be a good stick welder.  anyone can lay down cold lap.
Reply:I can understand the curiosity but if your thinking of purchasing a machine maybe you could give us an idea as to the type of work your doing and maybe one process or the other will fit better based on production, environment, and budget. Each has it's place. For me mig can speed things up in the shop but outside stick is way faster. Last summer I did a job with a friend building a scale section. He ran a wirefeed... and he spent most of his day moving his machine and generator. Me, I just pulled my cords around. I could reach every spot on the job with the engine drive parked in the middle. Granted on the flat position welds he was doing he was quick but at the end of the day I laid more weld.

Reply:My son started with an O/A class and loved it.  Then he did stick (3 classes), MIG and TIG.  Stick and TIG are his favorites, MIG is like ho-hum. But they all have their place."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
