I was bored in my garage and i fig id throw some welds down and maybe get some feedback.. These is the backround: 3/32 electrode 2 perc lantanated... 3/16 mild steel plates and i think a tool steel piece of an eyebolt thing from lowes sorry idk the metal.. No filler rod on the eyebolt thing because it was just out of boredom.. 15cfm argon and amps set on an everlast tig 200dx at 125 for the eyebolt welds and 135 for the plates with 3/32 er70s2. I was practicing using high amps so i could practice a quicker feed with the rod. Got snagged up towards the ends because i didnt set my hands in a way i could travel the whole way.. I dnt have any particular questions just want critiques so I can improve. Oh and i think i had a 1/8 or over slightly stickout.. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
Reply:Just thought of it. Is that undercut on the eyebolt thing welds? Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
Reply:The eyebolt is way to hot and the plate itself is to cold. I don't want to sound like a *******, but at first i though it was done with MIG.Sent from under a Miller welding helmet

Reply:Not too bad overall, not great though. The eye definitely needed filler. The undercut is because the puddle was looking for material. Reply:Steel almost always needs filler. There are some exceptions, but as a general rule always use filler with steel and alum. Stainless can be done either way.135 amps is too cold for 3/16". You'd want to be up closer to 180-190 if not a bit higher. A good rule of thumb is 1 amp per .001 of material. It's not always the case, but it's a good starting point for most stuff the average guy is going to weld.Your bead isn't bad, but it could use some work. Looks like you can slow down some and add filler a bit more frequently to tighten up our ripples. Consistency is "fair" I see some issues with this, but for someone just starting out you are doing better than many I've seen..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:PrestonFabIncThrow a magnet on the u-bolt.It doesn't look like a plated steel u-bolt, or brass. Undercut: yes, but no evidence of vaporization. If the U bolt was steel, you should not have the uniform bronze colorization in the bead to the toe of the undercut. If the u-bolt is nonmagnetic, you have discovered: ferrous/SS, to copper/Bronze Dissimilar Metal Welding. Albeit - A36 to Low Bronze.DMW is not uncommon in industry, but little known in home practice. I assembled one of these in 2000, and still service; the craftsmanship is what text-books are written about.http://www.a-holstein.de/index.php?id=272The Stainless Steel to Copper welds are stunning. If I were not stuck being Opus Ferro - I would strive to be arnold holstein.Opus
