Hello again all.  I was at a local fab shop that has a big SS pipe job for the drillers in Noth Dakota.   They were wleding this stainless with regular steel gas and what they said was a special flux core SS wire???   The welds looked great and they said, it was working great for them with no need to change gasses or anything else.   Can anyone speak to this flux wire?  What is it?  Does it work this well?   Best place to get it?
Reply:I don't know who told them C25 is ok, but that could be introducing carbon precipitation and resulting intergranular corrosion.I guess they are too stupid to use plain old cheap argon instead of a mix.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

I guess they are too stupid to use plain old cheap argon instead of a mix.

Reply:Wow, It is more common than I thought.  I will have to get some as it would be nice to be able to do some stainless and not get another tank for the few times it happens.  Which wire would be a general purose one?

Reply:Used some of the 309 wire to join some 304 beams to steel beams. If I remember right it is not made for out of position welds, other then that it ran well. I was shocked at using 75/25 on stainless at first too.
Reply:Shovelon,I am glad to see you show class and we both can win from this info.  I am happy to learn from anyone who has things to offer.  I had never been active on any forum but now I have found this vocation.   I am a roukie for sure.   I did some auto body things about 10 years ago and some stick about 8 years ago out of interest.  I just got into this metal working thing as I had been a woodworking teacher and builder for 30 years but find this metal stuff fun and challenging   Hope to learn from your understandings as well.

Reply:The info sheet on the Ultra implies pretty strongly that the main purpose of the cored wire is to weld dissimilar metals  ie:  SS to mild steel.  Your original post seems to read that they were welding stainless only.  I wonder if they were using the best wire for the job?Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:That is truw for the 309 but not so much for the 308 and 316
Reply:I don't think some gas coverage wouldn't hurt with flux core stainless. I have never tried a combo like that.I will run a little bit of CO2, between 5 and 10 L/min with regular flux core steel wire when welding steel to reduce spatter and make the welds look nicer.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:Originally Posted by shovelonLincoln list Co2 as cover gas also. Yikes! That just don't sound right, but hey, they did something.
