A friend dropped by tonight with the transmission cooler off his Dodge pickup. The bumper wore a hole through it. Not sure if that's common or not. Used the torch to soften the power coating enough to remove an area to work and burn off as much ATF as possible. Melted back the thin stuff until I could manage it. Closed it back up. Let it cool and checked it for leaks. It held. He's going to notch out the bumper so it doesn't rub any more. Quick fix with no waiting around for a new part to arrive. He paid me by hauling away a pallet of empty drums... I have space again.
Reply:Great save.  That cooler is about $375, I had to do the same repair on my truck last year.

Reply:I have some low temp aluminum solder and flux that I bought from a radiator repair place. Works great to repair aluminum radiators and a/c lines.  Probably faster than the tig approach.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma

Reply:Aladdin 3in1 is great for this stuff, just need a propane torch and a stainless brush. The repair is usually stronger than the base aluminum.

Reply:Agreed good job. Those are hard. In this case I believe that you did it the right way. Solders work well in come cases but not for filling a large area like that.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
