Picked up a 1968 sa200 from a guy who knows a guy for $250. Don't know if it runs, or welds, didn't get that far into her yet. It does crank, but extremely slow, needs a bigger batteryAlso needs a carb, didn't have one. Is it a red face? Looks like one, I think, even though the face is painted black. Would you guys recommend doing a "complete" engine overhaul, or not? And would you recommend chopping it? I'm taking all the sheet metal and the frame off and sandblasting it and repainting the entire thing. More updates to follow.....
Reply:Great find! No carb needed to test run.  Soak a shop rag with a little gas (NOT DRIPPING WET!), hold it over the intake opening and crank away keeping the rag over the opening.  If she has spark she'll purr like a little kitten.  You can use propane off your BBQ grill tank and regulator/hose too but that's a little trickier until you get the hang of it.Once you get it to run you'll be able to tell if it needs an overhaul.  Whether you do it or not depends on what your intentions for it are.Same goes for chopping.  Would you do it to see out the back window of your truck or because you can and it looks cool?MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Ok. I'll also try that tomorrow.
Reply:UPDATE: got all the tin off. Now trying to get the engine to start. Still no spark >Duane has been a big help with questions I've had, thanks! The pictures are taken straight on my phone, and they upload sideways. I have no clue how to flip them. 1968 SA2001972 Airco 200 Deutz diesel 1975 Lincoln Weldanpower 225Lincoln ac/dc buzz box
Reply:Also rad had a hole in it. So I'm going to see what I can find to either fix it, get it fixed or just get a new one. The spark is the main thing now!!1968 SA2001972 Airco 200 Deutz diesel 1975 Lincoln Weldanpower 225Lincoln ac/dc buzz box
Reply:Check your PMs on the spark issue and it'll be kinda hard to test fire without the manifold on. Make sure you remove the fan belt too before cranking it.  It is not very forgiving of fleshly objects.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I just noticed in your second photo of your first post that it appears to have a "Grind-Eze" installed that lets the R-57 idler go to weld/power speed when using the auxiliary outlet.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:UPDATE: Got the motor and generator separated and broke down to sandblast and paint. Still trying to get the engine to start. New things I need: Radiator, carburetor, mag coil for distributor. Seems like its all the expensive stuff. Does anyone know the paint code for an SA200 or a paint that matches the Lincoln color?    1968 SA2001972 Airco 200 Deutz diesel 1975 Lincoln Weldanpower 225Lincoln ac/dc buzz box

Reply:Man, I have been down the road. Check out my posting history and check out my overhaul. My suggestion on chopping it down would be to not do it. One of the reasons is that you can replace the Continental Engine with a Diesel engine. If it is chopped the diesel will not fit.My Gear is:Two Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 211Miller Spectrum 875 PlasmaMiller Spot WelderLincoln SA-200
Reply:I havent updated in a WHILE. Anyways, I finsihed pulling everything. Painted the engine and generator housing, and powder coated everything else. I even built a oven big enough just to do the frame for the machinePut new brushes in, new rad thermostat and hoses, new faceplate.Added oil pressure, water temp, voltmerter and an hourmeter to the front plate, also the on/off switch, start button and choke lever. It runs and welds good, just having some problems with idling up, which we're discussing over in the Lincoln forum. I probably forgot a lot of stuff I did. For the right price Ill let it go home with someone Attached Images1968 SA2001972 Airco 200 Deutz diesel 1975 Lincoln Weldanpower 225Lincoln ac/dc buzz box

Reply:The oven I built to powder coat the parts, and all the parts I was coating the one night. Us putting the engine and shaft into the frame at work. Reply:I'm jealous. Not because you have such an awesome welder......but because you have the ability to rebuild it.It's looking great!Timmer
Reply:Congratulations. Glad to hear it's running well. Looks nice too.
Reply:Wow! Impressive work, it looks like new. Great that you were able to restore it. I'm sure it will last for a long time to be able to serve you well.
