Never had any trouble in the past with welding steel to cast iron or cast steel. Never had any trouble in the past repairing cast iron or cast steel. That is until the other day. I was welding some new cast steel teeth to the ripper arm (these went on a box blade like contraption) and I couldn't keep the material from cracking. I always heat the entire part to around 400 to 500 degrees (according to my heat marker) and maintain the temperature throughout the welding process. Then I attempt to maintain a steady rate of cooling with insulated wrapping. In fact, I did a cast iron arm yesterday and it worked flawlessly. Nevertheless, that particular job has me looking into ovens for precise preheat and postheat control. I'm wondering what you guys use for pre-heat and post-heat.
