I am wanting to put a weld on grab hook onto my Kubota backhoe. This would be to attach a chain to for lifting out fence posts, loading things on trailers, etc. I found the attached picture online and it looks like the ideal spot to mount it as it is out of the way but the piece where the hook is mounted is cast. Mine is also a Kubota backhoe like the one in the picture so I assume it is the same material. Is it good to weld to? The backhoe has a maximum lift capacity of around 1,400 lbs so it is not going to be anything too heavy but the cast part makes me uneasy.
Reply:Weld it on the bucket back. Are you sure that the h link is cast and not welded together?
Reply:Not a bad idea. We just toss j hooks on the there
Reply:IMO, NEVER weld a hook on a bucket!  Weld an eye and use a clevis, or make the eye large enough to pass the hook.  Sooner or later somebody will try to get a little more height by curling the bucket, the chain will come out of the hook, and somebody gets hurt.  I've never seen it first hand, but I've heard enough stories to believe it happens.
Reply:My H link is cast. It is possible to weld on the bucket back and I have seen it done that way but I am worried about tearing it up while digging. Also I plan on getting several buckets of different sizes so it would require multiple hooks.

Reply:I've seen whole buckets fall off on the quick change style machines. Falling from 20 feet it would of done alot of damage to someone or somthing but lucky it hit dirt
Reply:What about getting a short sling and go around and add shackle ? If you are set on a hook, get two plates to sandwich in between the cast part. Drill holes in matching plates, weld hook to one , and bolt together with cast piece in between.
Reply:I like the bolt on sandwich idea. Nothing really wrong with the sling and shackle other than you always have to keep up with it. A hook you always have and it is quick and easy to use. Regarding the cast aren't there different types and some you can weld and some you can't? In the photo I attached the guy obviously welded it. It may have fell of the next day who knows.
Reply:if it's for your own use i would give it a shot. if by any stretch of the imagination the machine would be sold or lent out i would think twice due to potential liability issues.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:It's likely cast steel so just weld the hook on. If it was mine I'd weld a pad eye on it so I could use a shackle but that's simply personal preference
Reply:I have welded several Kubota parts that have broken and that were cast. The first one had already been welded at two different shops and had failed with 7018 being the rod used. I started calling around and found that these parts are cast from steel and some cast iron mixed in. That is why the 7018 failed. I used a Nichol cast iron rod and had no failures. That is what I would go with if it were me.
