I was planning to get a small SX3 type mill/drill (Grizzly G0619), but decided to get something bigger instead.A couple possibilities I found are the Grizzly G3103:http://www.grizzly.com/products/Vert...wer-Feed/G3103And the Grizzly G0678:http://www.grizzly.com/products/8-x-...cal-Mill/G0678Have any of you used these mills before?  Any comments about these models or similar size mills? One thing I noticed on the G0678 is the VFD (variable frequency drive) inverter in only rated at 1 HP while the motor is 1.5 HP.  I wonder if this will cause any problems and whether this arrangement (single belt ratio for wide range of speeds) provides adequate torque at low RPM.  Also, the G0678 is made in taiwan while the G3103 is made in china.  I wonder if there is much difference in quality.  Thanks.Electronics Engineer (embedded controls)Miller 200DX w/ Coolmate 3Thermal Dynamics 82 plasma cutterGrizzly G0678 8x30 millPM1440BV 14x40 latheHF 6x12 surface grinder
Reply:I have the Wholesale Tool equivalent of the gs3103.  It's a good machine for what it's designed for.  It has its limitations, but it also was affordable (I dumped 1500 on it)Take a overly enthusiastic cut, and it vibrates.  Stay within the limits of the machine, and it's a decent machine. My take on machines is.................How far do you go?  Minor milling jobs within the capability of a home shop are nice.  Anything larger should be farmed out to a machine shop.  The extra money you spend to aquire home capability isn't worth it.I'm pretty sure I do a bit more than hobby work, and I've found the smaller machines fit the bill for me.  I refuse to spend anymore money to get more capability, it simply isn't cost effective. The beauty of the knee mill is the ability to retain setups.  You can change tooling while retaining original setup measurements with a knee mill.  This isn't possible with a drill/mill type of machine"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:I don[t know if it's true, but I've heard bad things about the geared head imported milling machines.(excessive play, bad parts)  I think the one your mentioning is a geared head, just took a quick look at it.Belts are a PITA, but they're sort of a safety factor.  They'll slip if you overload the machine.I really don't have enough experience to give a definitive opinion on geared head machines"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Oh crap, took another look at it, it's not a gear head I guess.I honestly don't know a thing about that type of machine."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:My puter puked momentarilyI only work with steel.  I've found that my spindle speeds are pretty constant within a narrow range.  Around 200 something up to around 600rpm, and this depends on the size of the tool.I very seldom have to change belt speed.  I find that the low range is perfect for most of what I do.I mostly do slotting and boring, and some surfacing.  Pretty mundane stuff, but still necessary, and it's opened up a whole new world when it comes to fabrication of the kinds of things I do.  I sort of live within my meansThe money I saved by going with a bare bones machine allowed me to spend money on the tooling. The cheaper machine will do a lot Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Originally Posted by ZacThe mill you have looks a lot like the Grizzly G3103 except without their label.  I will be using it on mostly on aluminum, but occasionally mild steel, and stainless steel.  The G3103 only goes to down to 240 RPM.  I wonder if that's low enough.  (I suppose I could change the pulleys and maybe get a lower RPM )I'm looking at a used G3103 that might go for about $1000.  I was planning on a Grizzly G0619 (SX3) initially, but decided it is a bit too small and the lack of knee too inconvenient.Did you get an expensive vise (Kurt, Parlec, etc.) or go with an import?  I'm trying to decide on the type and size of vise I should get too.  (along with all the other accessories since I don't have anything beyond calipers now)Do you find the maximum spindle to column of 5.5" and spindle to table of 12.5"  to be a problem?
Reply:Oh, the vise is another Wholesale Tool item.  Around 70 bucks"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Samm those look like some heavy hoggin' cuts. Whatcha using for coolant and pump?Whatcha boring? How precise?I wondered about robbing the head off of a mini-mill and using it for portable work.Good Luck
