Got a day off and couldn't stand it. So came up with this smoker.  It's 18 inch .375 pipe. And some other scrap.  the start.  some not so good 8010 on my hand cut junk ha ha  fire box and damper set up. Works like a champ.  getting closer. It's a reverse flow smoker design. I did all the figuring of flow and volume required based on what it would take with water. It worked out well. It's easy to maintain temps from 145 to 350 in the cooking chamber. Surprisingly I only have a 5 degree difference from one end to the other...... Could be the cheap thermometer. Tomorrow will paint and finish up the last few things  bottler opener and shelf. Was a fun way to spend an afternoon.
Reply:last shot got to make something for the front to replace my jack stand. May ad a Hoosier pole for my umbrella.
Reply:That looks Great !!!! Ahhh.... But I think the smoke stack should be on the other end of the fire box ????There is never enough time to do it right ; But plenty of time to do it over .
Reply:Was waiting for the smoke stack question/ comment. I put a plate in the bottom of the cook chamber to carry the smoke and heat to the far end away from the fire box .it is welded in solid about 1 inch above the opening from the fire box to the cooking chamber it has a 14.3 cubic inch opening. All the openings are the same size as well as the air inlets when fully open. Flow is about 32% of total volume. Results in complete combustion. It reverses the flow and in theory should heat more evenly. ....... It also makes a nice tray to put beer or wine to flavor the meat.Last edited by specopswelder; 12-26-2013 at 11:04 PM.

Reply:Dave not a problem I will get some pics of the inside and put them up. I also installed a 1 inch drain and valve on the plate to drain grease and left over beer wine or drippings. Thanks for the complements. I will get some more pics. It functioned perfectly testing flow temp and fire control. Just have to get some good pecan wood and cook on it.
Reply:Specops.... Looks awesome.  Those 8010 welds look beautiful!!! "Hey I didn't come to look and learn, I came to turn and burn.... If I can't light up, I'm gonna light out!"-JodyIdealarc 250 "Fatman"MM 252MM 211 "Little boy" Victor Torches

Reply:Thats nice, ,  , how much does it weigh?
Reply:wish i could do some "Not so good 8010" like that.........

Reply:I have no idea of the exact weight. A lot probably 300lbs or a tad more. Thanks for checking it out. More modifications to come.BBQ is whenever any one is passing by. Love reasons to drink a beer and cook.
Reply:Nice job. That design works well,we use one at a yearly beef festival. It's amazing how you can adjust the dampener and watch the temp respond so quickly. The 3/8" wall pipe once heated keeps a even temp for the duration of cooking.

Reply:Nice work there.  I like the title to your thread.  On my days off I'm always workin on or lookin for a project.  I couldn't get the steel yesterday I needed for my project, so I'm just going to use some scrap to make a rack to organize my scrap.  Nice to see another welder who can't help but weld on his days off.
Reply:Thanks for the comments . I do tend to keep myself busy with projects on my days off. This last weekend I drove my rig to lowes for some wood. Ended up welding some parts on a motorcycle on the parking lot. Then had a guy that needed his paving machine fixed up ask me to come work on it after that. ..... My project got pushed back. Who can so no to cash money ha ha. That kind of stuff happens to me a lot when I am not at work. Mick I try and get some pics of the inside. I done have any at the moment.Dubl tWork has been a little slower due to the holidays .... Actually a nice change of pace. 2014 is looking to be a slammed year. Hopefully will get to hot some new places around the country.
Reply:What kind of work exactly do you do for a living?
Reply:Pipeline welder is what I do at the moment. I have done lots of work in the mining industry ... Rebuilding shovel buckets , loader. New fabrication for heavy equipment. Done lots of stainless steel work also.I enjoy pipelining the most. Don't miss the mine and all of the headaches of MSHA.
Reply:Nice! That looks  only another day off -and about 40 degrees of temperature drop- away from being the ultimate wood stove. Speaking of days off... What happened to the forklift tines, the drill press guy got a day off too? Happy New Year
Reply:That called a reverse flow smoker.
Reply:Looks good.  8010?  Think you are going to need it?  LOL.  I had some 11018 I could spare, but I used it on a mailbox stand. LOL  The guy helping me could believe it.  I told him the state required that grade of electrode due to DOT standards and all.  Sometimes you still find guys that fall for the Sky Hook.  just a could questions.  how long is your cooker and also your fire box?  What size is your stack?  did you set the stack at grill height or below?  two last questions, where is the grill set at and how far below is the baffle that directs the smoke and heat?  I love poker designs like this.  I know you have been to thesmokering.com.  if not then you would love it.
Reply:Figured I'd put some pics cooking in this smokerI haven't painted the outside or nothing yet. Still using it a bit to see if I want to modify it before final paint.  gettin it find up.  two types of ribs and pork loin. Might out some shrimp on in a little bit drill bit handle . Temp gage.
Reply:Scott to answer your question. I have two stackable racks and adjustable heights on the main one. I have the stack set just above middle of the cook chamber. My theory was it was still get smoke down low and not over smoke the top. Who knows if it will work. Never built one before just making it up as I go. I wish I would have looked at the forum you recommended before building this.  My flow calculations did end up matching closely some of the online ones they recommend using.
Reply:I have almost the same smoker.  16 inch pipe firebox and smoke chamber, diamond plate end caps and door,  Not a reverse flow smoker though.  My next one will be a little bigger.  Im thinking of having a 4x8 sheet of 1/4" rolled.  That would be roughly 30" pipe.More is never enough.
