Looking for an idea to fab a rotating wall....

I got a request to fab the frame of a rotating wall, 5 ft wide 90 inches tall with 8" chAnnel. It needs to have a pipe in the middle for electrical, and its only anchored to the floor. Any one done this before? The bearing setup is making me scratch my head.

Reply:My idea is to use a tapered roller bearing like on a rear wheel drive axle.  Maybe even use an axle shaft as the base.
Reply:how much total weight does it need to support?

Reply:Will the wall rotate around or just back and forth. Take a significantly different mechanism for each. How will it be fastened to the floor too. Take a pretty hefty base to support a free standing wall. Be tough to do on a wood floor and keep it hidden unless you can go through to the supports. Need much more info here.
Reply:I have seen them with massive hinges on one side and rollers on the other.  They looked like a bookcase and rotated inside the hidden room. Rotation was only 90 degrees.  Do you want your wall to rotate 360 as show on the video?
Reply:@ Cdavid82 - define the wall's center of rotation (COR) and the required degrees of sweep.  Wall required to rotate a full 360deg? 180deg? One revolution?  Multiple revolutions?  COR @ the wall's midpoint?  Electrical requirements?  Dead loads (fixed, material) and live loads (variable, attached fixtures for side A and Side B) for the door?  The loads will govern your bearing selection.  May be need slip rings at the pipe base to electrically "connect" the wall's devices.  A sketch of the wall and bearing setup would assist in your quest."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
