Now looking at $700. For a 1978 milker dialarc with pump, cooler, tig torch, foot pedal, and argon bottle. I am also considering a used Thunderbolt 300/200 if I can find one or a hobart stickmate 309/200. Any advice is appreciated. This will be my first welder purchase. Thanks,Raf
Reply:Between the two, I'd take the Dialarc HF. Stick wise, it's going to be built better than the Tbolt/Stickmate and you have the option for AC/DC tig.You are not going to likely find the bigger version of the Tbolt used. It's not a really popular item from my guess. My guess is most people who buy Tbolts buy them because of price, and in that case, they'd go with the standard machine. Those who really do need more power, are going to step it up to a bigger industrial class machine like the Dialarc/Idealarc or an industrial class inverter like a CST. There just isn't a huge market for a mid range machine like the bigger Tbolt.Be aware, I have seen some people get snookered with some of the "odd" Tbolts that are out there. Miller made a 440v only unit. One member here got a really "great" deal on one, only to find out the reason it was so cheap, and still available was almost no one could power it. If you do locate one of the bigger units, make sure it will run off 230v power if you plan to use it at home.$700 for a Dialarc HF isn't a bad price, but it's not a super deal either. The cylinder adds some to the deal, assuming you can swap it when empty..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Thank You DSW again,Thanks for the warning? I guess the larger 300/200 equivalent to the larger Thunderbolt, may not be around for long. That could be another reason for me not to choose the $899.00 Stickmate. I Know my buddy does not have any proof of ownership or purchase for the argon tank, which comes with a 3/4 filled tank. I called the LSW AND WAS told that it might need to be certified for 35.00. I should also mention that he will deliver it and help wheel it on some planks along our driveway 100' or so to the shed.So thatvkinda sweetens the pie a bit.
