I need help from the pros here.  I want to braze bronze or a stick of stay silv to a brass compression ferrule (I think they are made of brass).  I've tried both with and without flux (Hobart powdered) but just cant get anything to melt into the ferrule, its really frustrating and I cant figure out what I'm doing wrong.   I'm just trying to make a simple beekeeping hand tool.  So all I need is to braze or solder a stick or rod of metal to a brass ferrule.  Thanks!
Reply:Soldering is about cleaning, fluxing, and heating just to temp, then letting the heated metal melt the solder. We need more detail, but the short story is everything must be clean and at the right temperature to solder. Some metals won't solder. Don't use a torch on the solder, If possible, don't play the flame directly on the joint. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:Something as small and thin walled as a ferrule is almost impossible to get to and hold at correct temp long nuff to solder/braze....it heats and cools too fast....not nuff mass to delay the temp transients......you might as well be attempting to perform work same as a jeweler, but lacking his specialized tools.Try slipping ferrule over a brass rod several inches long with snug fit...give that ferrule a heatsink that when also heated to correct temp will retain heat longer and resist overheating better.Just take care not to solder/braze ferrule to rod
Reply:If worn out welder is correct, it's very small, it may be a job for a copper. I use coppers for soldering older maple syrup (pronounced surup, never siiiiirup) pans. these stainless pans used to be soldered with 50/50 solder. Now they are exclusively TIG welded after a lead in syrup scare that studies showed came from the earth not the equipment for the most part. A copper is a hunk of copper with a handle, one end is heated with a torch, the other is clean & tinned. Dip it in flux, heat the other end. when hot enough, wipe with a cotton rag, and apply a drip of solder. use it to heat, and deliver the molten solder. Everything gets flux except the part of the copper you heat with the torch.I prefer the clear liquid flux as it tolerates more heat exposure, and impurities sink to the bottom. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:Thank You for the replies, the tools are coming out nice !!  A little less heat,  more patients and practice helped.  But the best thing was sliding the ferrule over a steel rod that has an od the same as the ferrule id.  Keeps the heat nice and even, works great.  Thanks again guys.
