Reply:6013 shouldn't be in the same sentence as 6010 or 7018. If your 7018 got wet, warm them up in a toaster oven, bbg or what ever you have. If they were just in a humid environment but not really wet, hold the rod on the plate for few seconds to short the rod out to dry it and then weld with it.
Reply:if you have done any structural or pipe welding you would notice the difference in your welding with a wet or dry rod,or a cold 7018 rod one out of an oven have worked on jobs where we could only have enough to weld for 10 minutes, then back in the oven if you do any overhead work you will appreciate a dry warm 7018 and if you go for your 1" plate [0-unlimited] test you will be thankful for those rods
Reply:When welding high carbon or alloy steels, keep 'em in the oven.On mild steel, it doesn't matter, as it is not susceptible to underbead cracking.Hobart Beta-Mig 2511972 Miller AEAD-200LEMiller 250 TwinNorthern Ind. Hybrid 200Longevity Stick 140Longevity Migweld 200SThermal Arc Pak 3XR
Reply:I have never stored 7018 properly or heated them up. I don't leave them out in the rain just on the shop shelf. Never had any issues. Now if you are doing code work that is a different story but for farm type repairs I see zero need to do anything special.
Reply:I pour a half a cup or so of desiccant beads into the plastic rod holderThey will absorb any moisture. I bought a gallon bucket of them for my desiccant air filterMiller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221 True Wisdom only comes from Pain.

Reply:I was having trouble with some 7018 yesterday, and when the rod would warm up (about half way through the rod) the weld improved considerably, so I got out the little batch oven I have and put a number of pounds in the oven and it would weld much better when hot the air was humid and temp was cool, and to me dry warm rod seems to weld better than self stored rod, and these were in a tube similar to what is in the amazon link above, |
