So I got in a little more practice today,This is my 2nd time trying to learn to weldUsed Hobart 6013 and 7014  3/32"Ran some beads,Stuck two pieces together at an odd angle leaving a gap,  filled it in with the figure 8 or whatever its called methodLastly butt welded two identical chunks of steel together on all 4 sides, ground welds flat to look for porosity,  I can't tell where the weld was so i guess a success.

Reply:not that I am an expert but the beads on the plate look a little cold to me. what amps? what thickness metal? what rods?Lincoln 225 ac (my first machine)farmhand 115vac 70amp mig/fc toymiller aead 200le (my main machine)

Reply:I think it was a piece of 1/2" plate.3/32" 6013 and/or 7014The dreaded HF Tiny Toaster set at 80A
Reply:With that HF 80A toaster on 1/2" plate, all you're gonna get is some melted rod on top.
Reply:Go to Craigs List. I was unable to sell a nice big Hobart stick machine for $100.00, no takers I scrapped it. I got almost that for scrap. There are lots of fine stick machines cheap. I'd hold out for AC/DC I like Miller, Lincoln is good. I've still got my 20th Century I bought new in 1974. They last forever. Then see improvement.

Reply:If you'll get some 3/16" steel you can use those 3/32 rods and get decent penetration with that machine.GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Yep, use some 3/32 7018 to start with. You won't get AS frustrated. You shouldn't get frustrated till you've burned at least ten pounds of rod.
