I'm about to rebuild an old gate, and I need to do the hinge points right on the post..no electricity anywhere nearby. Can I use a home-style generator (Lowe's/Home Depot
) in the back of my pickup, with the 211 plugged into the 240 outlet?
Reply:Outlet on the genny will not match the welder. You'd have to build an adapter to match plugs. If I am remembering miller's manual, that machine should run of a genny assuming the genny is big enough. If the genny can supply 230v power, I know it has enough guts to at least run that machine on 110v up to 1/8" thick steel, maybe even a bit more with FC wire. If you need more power, you'll have to match the 230v plug on the machine ( probably a 20 or 30 amp 230v twist lock) to a 6-50R outlet. Some where I have one I made up that allows me to run my Maxstar 200 off the 20 amp 230v outlet on my 4500 watt genny and that's pretty much how I did it..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:DS, you're right; I just looked at the outlet and it won't accept the 220 plug. I'll try it on the 110 setup. Might be enough for doing a gate out of mostly thin wall. As always, thanks for the comeback.
Reply:Go ahead and make the 240v adaptor - your machine and generator will get along better in my opinion.I've run my maxstar 150s on my generator on 240volts - worked great.I'm not impressed with my two migs that I tried on 120v.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:I believe the genny will have an L14-30R possibly L14-20R twistlock receptacle. It's very convenient to have the adapter. BTW, I run my Hobart 210MVP off a generator all the time. Works great, even at full power. The Hobart tech support said the welder at peak will draw 6,600 watts (or something like that).John 3:16(2) Miller Pheonix 456(2) Millermertic 252Dynasty 210DXHobart 210MVPDoringer D350 SA Cold SawScotchman 350LT Cold SawWebb 10x50 MillWebb 15x40 LatheGeka Bendicrop Ironworker
Reply:I used to run a miller 140 of a homeowner special generator for a fence company, I could make it work but there wasn't oodles of penetration, those generators barely make enough power to get out of their own way...run some test beads, and definitely make the 240 adapterMiller Spoolmate 200 w/t S-52 WirefeederMM 211'09 Miller Trailblazer 302
Reply:Just a forwarning, just because a genset has something akin to a 14-30R doesn't necessarily mean there are 30 amps available at that receptacle. Don't take those at face value.
