Anti Vibration Solutions...

Ever been machining a solid piece in a lathe and the tool bit vibrates with that hi pitched squeal?..Ever been machining tubing and the tube begins to vibrate and make all sorts of nasty chatter marks in your piece?...Solutions below..Pic 1..Just hang a adjustable wrench off the toolbit and that takes care of that..Pic 2..Dealing with tubing...This is a 84" face X 12" diameter with a 3/8" wall water cooled roller that I am building..Pic 3..Just attach the chain to the rear of the carrage and throw it over the tube..Pic 4..Just let it hang there and all vibrations will stop... Notice in front of the tool how ugly it is compared with the second chip behind the tool..Remove chain about 3" from the end of the piece..That's how to deal with that noise that will make you go deaf/and vibrations that will ruin a piece of tubing without going nuts....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:The weld cleaned up sweet zap, pic 1.Long wimpy, wobbly cylinders suck, hard to grind also!Is that an old Monarch? And a King VBM/VTL  in the background? And a microwave below the nice Gerstner?Just nosey...Matt

Reply:Zap, once again your experience shows. Thanks for sharing.I machine some 17" diameter bowl shaped castings that develop a harmonic similar to turning a brake drum. A rubber bungee around the diameter keeps them quite and improves the finish.

Reply:Originally Posted by zapsterUse a crappy chain and keep it just for this..You WILL wear it out eventually...Lots of flat spots on this one now...I coat the roller with parafin wax before doing this...Gives the chain a chance and oil is not a option on things this big...Been doing this for many years and this took along time to get it right...Besides oil is WAY TOO MESSY!!!!!...zap!
Reply:Did a set of brakes today. On shoe surfaces, the strap is as good as a mute button, but the armature surfaces are nothing but LOUD, the rubber strap barely tones it down below the pain threshold.City of L.A. Reply:An old wheel weight on either side of the bit resting on the work will do a pretty good job taking the ring out of the metal and improve the surface finish.  We did the all the time on a brake lathe for a smooth finish on solid rotors,  Works like a charmI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
