Due to my non-perfect cutting with a grinder I had a 1/8" gap to weld over between two pieces of 1/8" square tube. One piece ran perpendicular to the midpoint of the other so only one edge was fully exposed inside and out.I'm using a Hobart AutoArc 130 mig and to weld 1/8" i have it set to 10/100 on the wire speed. When welding this joint I noticed it really melted itself into the work to the point that it actually looked like the weld bead was sunken into the material by a small amount.I ended up grinding it down flat and running another bead right over it but what can I do to mitigate this?
Reply:Perfect fit up is the key to perfect welding. If it wasn't perfect you should have never started. Not sure what the project was for, but show some pics and that will definitely help. Filling gaps is not so much a big deal for certain projects or jobs, but there is a skill level involved depending on the task at hand.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:are you butting the 2 tubes together? If you are that is normal and is not bad cutting. if you work the center of the bisecting tube with a hard disk and not the edges it will force the corners to wrap better.Miller Maxstar 200 SDPiperliner #10 Gold
Reply:Yea I was butting the tubes together. One tube going lengthwise and the other with the end going against it along the length of the other tube.

Reply:Focus more heat on the rounded edge. sometimes with a gap you will have to build up one edge first with a separate bead. Keep in mind that gaps will shrink some with the heat of the weld. Gaps are many times unavoidable, try fitting into an existing structure you will find that out real quick. Heavy wall square tube can be a real treat, sometimes you will have to lay a rod or strip into the joint, but it works.Miller xmt304, Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:In the trade of welding, perfect fit up is a dream but it's hardly reality. Reply:Originally Posted by BD1Ah come on MIKE. ANYBODY can do it with a perfect fit up ! The better the fit up , the quicker you can make the weld too. Granted , sometimes it doesn't work that way on a real job. That's why there are professional welders. Like the old guy said, If I can walk across it , I can weld it.
