I was digging around today and found these. The rod looks to have a copper coating, and a tapered end that is black. Can I get some info on these? Proverbs 4:23My company welds.

Reply:Put one in your stinger, set to DCEN and just play around a bit like it was a TIG torch.  Or make a twin Carbon arc torch and braze/heat stuff.  I just got a Marquette Redi-Spot carbon arc spot welder in the mail today.  Have no idea how to use it and I'm sure the 1/8" carbons will be impossible to find.  Weird stuff."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:I just bought several of the boxes of those on EBAY, although I think 1/4" are going to take a big mahine, like 250-300 amps for aircair.  I haven't used it alot, but it was impressive.
Reply:Yeah, I found that out.  lol Originally Posted by Stick-manIt is not going to do much like that. They are designed to be used in a air carbon arc torch. The process requires a lot of amps, a lot of air, it makes a lot of noise and a lot of smoke, it's AWESOME!!!
Reply:No. I'd like to get one.  Originally Posted by CEPDo you have one of these?

Reply:Sounds a lot like the carbon arc electrodes we used in stage spotlights.  You stick these electrode in the spotlight, wind the electrodes together until they ignite, pull them back until the spotlight is pulling the correct number of amps, then the automatic feeders keep them moving together until the electrode is burnt up.  You have to time your swapping of electrodes to make sure you don't run out before you need the spotlight again.KevKevin / Machine_Punk from The Aerodrome Studio - Lincoln PowerMIG 210 MP - Meco N Midget w/custom welding station - Vintage Victor 100Current Projects: The Aerodrome Studio
Reply:That box brings back good and bad memories. Used properly, they are great. Improperly used, they make a mess that is very difficult to remove. Had a guy put air pressure on top, and "welded" the carbon to the base metal. Almost impossible to grind off, and very difficult to air arc the remains off as well. Added a lot of time to the job to fix. We also used "jointed" rods too.
