Hi guys, just got a mill and am getting it set up so I ordered a 5/8" drill chuck and matching chuck arbor for the taper.  My question is, do i press the two pieces together and call it good or is there more to it than that?Thx
Reply:Drill presses have a taper, mills have a collet.  Something's got to bolt the chuck in.
Reply:this assembly is supposed to fit a collet so I can use a drill bit in the mill.  I have the collet that it goes into but these 2 pieces are separate.  It looks like they press together but I wanted to make sure before I did it and ruined something
Reply:Here are a couple of pics of the setup. Attached Images
Reply:The 'stubby' taper of the adapter shaft goes into the back of the drill chuck, just like you did. That taper is usually a 3JT (number 3 Jacobs Taper). As long as the taper 'numbers' match, that part and shaft shold assemble OK.But your adapter shaft has a tang on the end of the Morse side taper, which usually is used more for things like a drill press or a lathe.  A mill usually uses a drawbar (fancy threaded rod/bolt used to hold the chuck or collet in place vertically, snug it up so the matching tapers 'grab and hold',  and still allow removal).http://littlemachineshop.com/product...ProductID=1805(not affiliated with them, but I have ordered from them in the past.  They get a thumbs-up IMO.)It looks like you have a match for the tapers on the drill chuck side, but you might or might not have a match on the mill side of things.Small mills seem to commonly have either a 3MT or R8 taper.  You have to match the taper on the mill side of things.  And like I said above, mills usually have a drawbar arrangement.  So you probably need to match that as well.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...

Reply:Yup your right!  I got the wrong one.  I will see if I can send it back and get a r8.Thanks!
Reply:Originally Posted by rlitmanI've never heard of a mill with a morse taper head.  Side loading will make the morse taper release, so its very bad for milling.
Reply:You don't mill with a drill chuck, EVER.  There are milling machine adapters that hold a Morris Taper and drill chucks for drilling in a mill.  There are a wide variety of mill adapters, make sure you have the right one for your machine.Russell
Reply:I wasnt planning on doing any milling with the drill chuck, only drilling.  Just trying to get the correct one.
Reply:Originally Posted by MoonRisepsst, that's why the drawbar is there.  To keep the taper tight even when there is side loading from the milling.  A Morse taper by itself with side load absolutely could loosen up.  So the drawbar is there to keep the taper shaft/collet/holder/tool tight into the mill and not let it loosen.Match the taper shaft to the mill head, whether 3MT or R8, and USE THE DRAWBAR!
