Hi guys ,I'm driving 3 hrs to look at and probably purchase a miller s-32p 12.  It looks to be in great shape. The owner knows very little about it, was his grandfather's.  Anything I  should watch out for.  I'm bringing my welder to test. He has no idea what wire is in it.   I have some flux .035 on hand can I at least test it with this?  Anyhow, let me know what you guys know about this machine and what I should look for.  Price is $300. ThanksFarmer2
Reply:Buy it fast. If the case is not smashed up and the gun is in good shape grab it.  It's worth that with out a gun. If it has meters it is worth more but still worth that price with out them. Dan
Reply:If it works its a steal. Mine was new in 1999 and its still going. no problems no nothing. I'd buy all I could if my wife wouldn't find out.Arcon Workhorse 300MSPowcon 400SMTPowcon SM400 x 2Powcon SM3001968 SA200 Redface1978 SA250 DieselMiller Super 32P FeederPre 1927 American 14" High Duty LatheK&T Milwaukee 2H Horizontal MillBryan
Reply:I would be on it for $300. Not a lot to break on them. If you have a 10 pound spool you will need aspacer 2 inch Pvc pipe will work. If you have to test it with a small spool lay it on its side.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:You guys have me excited now.  Hopefully its not too good to be true.  I'll post pics upon my return
Reply:Shoot, don't have any 2" PVC.  How about 1" 1/2 or 2" coupler? How long should it be cut to?
Reply:See if it's a "Super" or not.  The Super has a gas solenoid and I believe a contactor in it.  It was optional on the standard ones.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I used them when they first came out in the early 1980s. Lincoln had the LN-22, Miller came out with the S-32-p, then Lincoln came back with the LN-25. Only trouble I remember with them, is the pop rivets pulled through the plastic door that attached the hinge.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:I think the 12 stands for the roll size it will take, like the newer 8VS or 12 VS does.Interesting Dan. I'll have to keep that in mind for my Super S32P12..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I remember the days of the ol 2-inch PVC trick. I even had to do it to my Linde Mig 21 feeder.   Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Well guys the good new is I got it and its in great shape.  The gun looks like its hardly ever been used and the first weld I layed down with it looked suprisingly good considering I had no idea how to set the machine.  Now the bad news, when I got it home I fired up the hobart champion elite (25 hrs on machine).  Hobart started up just like normal but backfired and died.  I tried to restart but the choke was bad stuck. Took the air filter off and was able to get the choke unstuck.  I am suspecting some valve train damage.....rocker off pushrod maybe.  Anyway, I'm pretty discouraged or I would have some pics up of the suitcase.  farmer2
Reply:Remember don't set that Hobart to AC or you'll fry the feeder. Also since that Hobart is CC only IIRC that VS feeder won't run solid wire well in short arc like most people think of a typical mig machine. Up in spray mode  especially with FC wire, that feeder will lay down some material fast though..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Hopefully it just backfired and slammed the butterfly valve shut. All that other stuff you said about pushrods, valves, and pistons swapping holes is Not Good. Simple fix. Reply:There should be a switch inside the case where you can switch between CC and CV.I hope your welder issue is just a sticky valve and not a lifted seat or worse. Dan
