Hi guys, after looking thru the forum and looking at all the great work I got some ideas for building myself a welding cart. Here is what I plan to build. I made a 3D model of it.I plan on using 1"x1"x1/8" angle iron I found and have the side panels waterjet out of 1/8" steel. The cart is for my Lincoln Pro Mig 180 and a 200 cf bottle I haveLet me know what you guys think
Reply:The design for the sides is nice, but it seems like your wasting a lot of space under the welder. You could add some extra shelving or hooks to hang your wires from. I'm hate wasting space since my garage is so small, it just seems like there could be more underneath. Otherwise its functional and that's all that matters.

Reply:I'm with fasttruck on the need for an additional shelf, you may want to add a TIG machine or plasma cutter down there later on. You will also be needing some sort of rack or hooks to hang your leads on when not in use and maybe one to hold your hood, too.I would consider placing the small caster wheels further apart for extra stability, like inline with the rear wheels. Be sure to post pix of the build when you start on it.
Reply:Yeah I have some brackets to hold my tank I just didn't add all the finishing touches to the model since those will be things I add to it as I go. This is just my concept of what I would like. Thanks for all the input so far guys
Reply:Looks like you can built a really nice cart. These folks have good ideas. From experience these narrow gage carts do tend to turn over easily especially when they get loaded top heavy. Carry on. Post some pics

Reply:Tackit I really like your cart. Great post of your shop. Did you build the crane and press also?
Reply:It looks nice but, maybe underneath you can put a drawer.
Reply:The reason for the tilt up on smaller carts is to ease access to the machine face, since yours is up high, just make it level.
Reply:I like the look of it tilted up. I'm going to try to find a drawer from a filing cabinet and make the cart wider to fit the drawer
Reply:I would get a small tool chest, and slip it in under the top platform.its' a fantastic thing to have all your tools in one place. nice concept!
Reply:My project has been put on hold for time being... I got laid off of work so I won't be able to get the side panels waterjet until I get a new job. On the plus side my girlfriend bought me a new chop saw for valentines day, so now I can cut the angle iron I have at home. I was originally going to use the cold saw at my old job.Last edited by !v@n; 02-16-2014 at 01:56 AM.
Reply:Sad to ear that (:, hope your project will resume shortlymy very best regardsI will try my best to be understoodMY DREAM GARAGE
Reply:I had a plasma on a narrow cart up high like that, and I ended up putting a piece of angle across the front and moving the front wheels outboard 2" on each side. Really made a difference in stability. I would make that cart wider.I would start thinking about things that I use that I could store underneath. Clamps would be one thing. You could make a holder to go underneath like this picture I stole from someone here.A drawer for consumables would be nice like mentioned before. How are you going to handle your leads?I really like the design. Attached Images
Reply:I redesigned it wider already. I also plan on putting hooks to hold my leads on it. I figure I would add that once I have the main part complete.I really like the clean look of those vise clamp holders

Reply:That's awesome... What did you use to cut the grooves in the tubing for the clamps?
Reply:I did it on my buddies mill, but next time I would just tack a straight edge and use the plasma. Depending on the spring out, that determines where to put your second cut. You also have different size ends on different size clamps.
Reply:I would switch to tube at least for the uprights, angle will be very flexible even with the nice gussets. When you pull to the side to move it it may want to flex on you. Tubing for the upright part will eliminate that. If you add drawers or a tool box it would help too.
Reply:It will never get built just like the rest. I'm gomma start showing pics ................!EDITED by Moderator. Mike you gotta cut this stuff out!Last edited by SWells; 02-17-2014 at 02:28 AM.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:No need to water jet those parts out. Just use hole saws in a hand drill, and a cut off wheel for the big curves. Hour for both of them tops!
Reply:OK Mike. You know you can't post picts like that. I deleted the post with the offensive pict. Violate the rules again and you get to sit in the corner for a while..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald ReaganI had thought of using some rectangular tubing for the uprightsI might have to try cutting the gussets by hand.

Reply:Here's my updated mockup it's wider and uses rectangular tubing

Reply:I can only draw pictures like that in my mind....... usually as I'm building it a piece at a time.
