Weld Deposit?

Can anyone share some thoughts on this weld deposit? This is a "nick break" test strap from a welder qualification test. My questions are 1.) What is the material?, 2.) What caused it?, and 3.) Would it disqualify a welder under 1104?
Reply:...........What type of pipe was the strap cut out of?(Since your referring to API 1104 this must be pipe because 1104 refers to the code of pipelines and related facilities).... This doesn't look like any pipe strap I have ever seen. What is the material? you said it come from a welder qualification test strap and your referring to 1104 already. This would be your everyday run of the mill steel pipe. I am confused on where your going with this....give some better pictures of the straps not just the break. If your trying to qualify yourself for 1104 that wont work.What causes this break is it is a Destructive test! You have to break for a nick break test. It doesn't look like a clean break that I have ever seen either.What test did you try to take? a 6G on 6" sch.120 pipe? I see a slight curve in that top piece. Which it would be some XXH wall or that picture is just blown up in my face lol.From the looks of the hacksaw cuts you went further than an 1/16th on your transverse notch. Reply:Your not going to get us to tell you pass or fail. without visualizing the test procedures and welder qualification I don't know what your doing or have done to weld that. I don't know what type of rod you used, amps, nothing. And even if you had that you still need an actual Destructive technician to tell you pass or fail. I suggest you go to your nearest Weld Testing company and do a qualification test for whatever your trying to do. Sounds like you want us to tell you if your good to go or not. We cant do this. You need a 3rd party inspection weld test if your trying to qualify a welder to go on a job, or if you yourself welded this and trying to see if your good to go on a pipeline. We cant tell you this. Looking at that picture is just speculation.
Reply:Thank you for the input. I am a welding inspector but I did not prepare these specimens. Pipe tested was probably 12.750in,.500wt x60, I can't be sure. I was asked my opinion on that "deposit" inside the weld metal, but had never seen it in this quantity.

Reply:I am a CWI myself. I would definitely go to a weld test company if you have concerns on a welder qualification. I have a list of different weld tests, I have a code book for 1104 because that's what I tested in. It wont tell me what to look for. You have to go to continual education and get into Destructive and Non Destructive classes and they will show you spot on what to look for. Also, for your welder to even be qualified under 1104 he has to pass several tests(Depending on what size pipe), nick break is just one of them. There is also a Branch on Sleeve connection test if he is doing any hot-taps into a line. Most companies want a 3rd party inspection service qualify your welder before they go on a job and weld out high pressure piping systems. In-house inspection is going to be a thing of the past soon. My old company had me do a lot of testing (By a weld testing company) to make sure I was the right caliber welder for the job.
