Eye issues !

Hello i have the Miller Digital elite helmet and i mostly have been using X-Mode with the shade on 10 the delay on 6 and the sensitivity on 6 also. i have been noticing that after i weld my eyes feel dry and they are red mostly in the left eye. i wear safety glasses under the helmet that blocks out 99.9% of harmful UV Rays and i have not been flashed when this happens. I do not wake up at night with "Sand in the eyes" so i do not think it is arc eye they just feel red and dry for a couple of days. what could it be ? i am doing MIG welding by the way for automotive patch panels.
Reply:put some eye moisterizing drops in your eyes before you weld next time, a couple times throughout thew day.   you w/o notice may not be blinking enough while welding.   Thera tears, is a good brand

Reply:Don't know about the Miller brand, but both my old Viking, and my new Jackson, are set at #4 sensitivity.#6 sounds like it's turned up too high.  Your hood should darken when you face the sun.  This can be annoying at times, especially when you're welding while facing in the direction of the sun, but it's the proper setting to keep it safe."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:If it is eye strain, maybe you would find a cheater lens of some sort helpful.

Reply:Could be from welding fumes as well if your getting smoke in your hood
Reply:Delay is only how long it takes to un darken after you stop. 1 or two seconds is all you need. sensitivity is adjusted if welding in a very bright area and it tends to stay dark, or the arc isn't bright enough to trigger the lens. I get dry eye from the air current through the helmet, especially with the Miller Cool Band I bought to help with fog. I doubt you get UV through the lens, but as Shovelon said, you might get reflection from your shirt.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:I find that wearing darker color clothing helps with the reflection. I have only found a cheatter lense necasarry when it comes to being close enough to melt your hood, or doing Tig. I have the same helmet and the way I have it set up is so the mask is pretty much the farthest from my face, this is to accommodate a respirator though.
Reply:I also only use the welding mode though. For the x-mode as I understand it is used for traversing jobsites or to accommodate two or more people welding in a tight area so that way it picks up the current of the other welder and you wont be flashed. So like if someone lights an arc but you aren't facing directly enough for the sensors to pick it up. It provides indirect protection.
Reply:Thanks for the reply guys I do not notice any reflection under my hood and there is not a lot of smoke. Although I am welding Coated steel I'm guessing possibly the zinc is messing with my eyes?
Reply:Zinc is really nasty. I have had zinc poisoning before. Miller makes a respirator specifically for their hoods.
Reply:I'm guessing it could be from the coating, try a fume extractor or a fan at the back of your head to keep it going away from you. Not enough air to blow away your shielding but enough to keep the smoke going somewhere else.
