I am a elevator structural welder so I do a lot of 7018 in a low light shaft. I've been taping my flashlight to my chipping hammer so I just patented the idea. Check out slagenator on YouTube. I made a couple of demos and just got a website up for orders. Let me know what you think. Did I just waste some money or is it a good idea?

Reply:Its a good idea and having a patent under your belt is also a good thing. On the other hand and not trying to be negative but truthfull, I could copy your patent and use it in my garage all night. It would cost you more money to try to get a cent from me for stealing your idea. Not worth it for you. Now if I made a million of them and sold everywhere, you could get some royalties from me. You did say let me know what you think but like I said, its a good idea and prestigious to have a patent in your name. Good luck with it
Reply:For me I could probably get enough light in my garage. But when I am on a extension ladder, body harness, bags on with brush, hammer, rod & flashlight. While organizing my fall protection while climbing the ladder to weld in a I-beam flange stiffener and pulling up my stinger lead. When I get to welding and chipping, if I can remove the flashlight grab move because its already incorporated into my chipping that's a great benefit to me. More efficient and safer because I can use less moves and get out of the situation a little quicker. This is what I actually do with it. If your a stand in a nice welding location welder you may not relate to the slagenator. But if your a out of position way up high, hold on for life with one hand and weld with the other vertically up for 15-20" 7018 1/8". You may benefit from this. No offense to all you comfy welders I wish I was there with you. The video demos on slagenator.com were done in the elevator shaft with me standing in the shaft. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I think its a great idea. What about the durability of it though? How well will the light hold up after repeated chippings day in and day out. I know my chipping hammer has been through a lot of abuse, dropped before, being exposed to the high heat... But this could work as a extra/spare hammer when your working in dark/tight jobs as you do. Good luck with it. I hope it does work out for you.Ya gotta spend money to make money!

Reply:I am a union elevator constructor and welding in the elevator shafts go through rigorous welding inspections. The shaft offers little lighting and a lot of shadows. When I climb up a extension ladder with fall protection on, a stinger cable wrapped around my shoulder, my tool bag holding 7018 1/8" rod, chipping hammer, wire brush and a flash light. I hold on for life with one hand and weld with the other, the slag removal process is made more efficient by me not having to put my chipping hammer away, check the weld with a flash light and see a piece of slag I missed. Now I'll reach back in and chip the slag. The flash light in the slagenator helps me identify. Undercut as soon as the slag is removed without reaching back into my bag and doing a tool switch. Perhaps I'm the only weld or crazy enough to work under these conditions but I doubt it. After years of doing this and knowing how many locations I typically weld in a shift, I've seen the claimed improvements in my efficiency. You'd be surprised on how much time a production weldor can save by removing a step. If your work environment doesn't require what mine does than perhaps the slagenator is smoke for you, but for me it's the preferred choice in slag removal. The manufacturing process of these tools are done by an American small business with help and input with my fellow weldors in the discussions. The patent is pending and no one else is calling anything the slagenator so I'm using it. After extensive patent searches there are no hand held impact devices with a light attached so there's that. We are not a big high dollar organization with unlimited resources, we have tried many scenarios to develop a product that functions as it is claimed and it does. If the slagenator doesn't fit into your work environment than it just doesn't fit. There are many tools I do not have but could get if I needed it. The slagenator helps me out for what I do and I thought it may help you as well. I do appreciate the constructive discussions though and I have put the slagenator through the test and I like what it has become. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:This started by simply taping a light on a chipping hammer. Regular make shift tool for the job. Got laid off for a couple of months and put the idea together. Just a guy trying out the entrepreneur thing. Originally put a cheap light in to keep cost down and, like you'd expect, the light source was damaged, pretty quickly. After many trials of different light sources with some added damping I found a light source that survived through the life of the battery, and the next one and so on. By giving away some samples to weldors in my trade a small demand was created and some input was added to the final product. Others started asking if they could buy some so I made a small batch and also made a way to get them online. The amour in the handle can house many different types of light sources, I found the one I like. As for replacement parts that's a great idea and I can tell you that this tool is probably not where it will end up, it is evolving. All the legalistic battles this tool will endure, I'm sure hasn't even started yet. It's just a chipping hammer with a light. I do have a patent attorney pushing this through and there is no other patent searchable that compares to this. I've seen guys who bought this and cut it out the handle and welded it to the top of the hammer. Other guys cut if off and welded it to the side of their wooden handled chipper. All great ideas and no negative feed back. Someone asked for a rechargeable one, just not there yet. I am a weldor primarily. Not a high power industrial super giant trying a gimmick. These discussions are helping me out with trade input as I can personally relate to this environment. I have weld burns on my arms. I am welding on top of a hospital today. I get paid by the hour as a union elevator installer, figured if when I get to the job the is an empty elevator shaft and when I leave there is a full functioning, inspected elevator there, heck I might be able to make a chipping hammer with a light work. Fitters are pretty savvy too, so be careful trying to sell them lighted pipe wrenches. Maybe you should try lighted trowels to concrete placers. They spend a lot of time with their head lower than their butt. It might fly.
Reply:I don't see a problem with the light holding up to use.. Unless your welds are sub-par. Slag from most rods should come off easily, usually from just scraping the hammer across the weld. Reply:I can destroy any tool if that's my intention. When I use tools the wrong way, there's a chance it will break. The slagenator is not a slegenator. Chip chip chip break light is how I started with my cheap light sources. Realizing this was bad I had to decide to quit or find a better light. I whipped out the money and splurged for a nice impact resistant light source with some extra Cush and did alittle something extra just for the naysayers. It's not a cheap tool because its not a cheap tool. The tool needs to exceed its value and I believe the slagenator does.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:You can buy white light LED's + resistors from your LES($5) and fit them to your Slager and use your OCV from your stinger/welder when you need light. No batteries needed and beleive me, I have made a few of these lights that work off of my weldor with 69 VDC. The main reason I made LED lights was for discharging capacitors. For $5 in parts and using it with your stinger you could bring the price down to a reasonable chipper/light. The fact that this works from a welding supply will get the attention of weldors IMO. If you use that idea, dont forget me I think Im gonna make me a ?
Reply:Try chipping out a deep groove, 3or 4 layers of rust and scale, maybe peening a weld, then tell us how great it is.I have had plenty of (high quality ) flashlights break without purposely beating the piss out of them. Reply:Heres a red led but white light LED's are available and cheap these days. For $5 plus hammer, I would say its no big loss if you drop it down an elevator shaft and it breaks.BTW, its polarized to work Reverse polarity with red wire on stinger yellow wire on work but there are no problems only challenges. Reply:I got strapped into my little Kubota tractor by a bimbo, and it's a pretty good little tractor too.Slaginator, all due respect but you need to think bigger and better. This product, IMO, isn't worth the effort you're putting into it but I do admire your energy and gumption to go to the length of creating a website, and promoting your product. That experience should prove to be much more valuable to you than any income you derive from the hammer - if you ever DO realize income from it's sale. There are lots of people with ideas, some with very good ideas that could hold the potential for real positive results but most of them don't go much farther than the 'thinking it up' stage because their originators lack what you've shown that you have - the willingness to put it on the line in fair market competition despite all the hurdles and the strength to continue to support and believe in your idea in the face of negative reactions. There are kids in every university trying to find the beat-all software or app business idea that brings money to their door. Some of them develop a product to the point that they can make a presentation before potential investors. If an investor thinks their thing MIGHT fly some of the kids walk away from their demo with hundreds of thousands and even multiple millions of dollars to continue the development and bring their thing to market. Some of those never even need to face the market themselves because one of the big players like Google, Facebook, or the rest decide that they'd better corner this idea before it makes someone else money and they buy it sometimes for billions of dollars. Ta-da instant rich kids who had an idea that both you and I would probably think pretty dumb. But they put it out there and there are the thousands of other kids with ideas who never get the steam to try theirs out in the money world. It's a matter of which type are you and I think you've shown us.Now I'm not suggesting that you turn in the app/software direction. All I am saying is that what got those kids rich is the same energy that you've shown to us. IMO, this hammer won't fly but I don't think you should let it get you down if it doesn't.Last edited by hill; 01-01-2014 at 01:09 PM.MM210TA186TA95sLincoln AC/DC Tombstonegood old Smith torch setup 24v Readywelder mig w/spoolgunSB H 10 latheBridgeport mill6x12 K.O.Lee surface grinderK.O.Lee tool/cutter grinder
