Hi all, I'm new to the forum. Had a good search around and couldn't locate an answer so I thought I'd just ask.I have to build up layers of weld onto a rotor made from hardox steel. I have sourced some suitable rods to use (3.2mm) but I am a little unsure on technique. Does anyone have any experience of this that could give me a few tips? I'm not building up to a sharp point, more of a flat top, 5mm wide, with sloped sides. Thanks for looking.
Reply:I did this a couple weeks ago.  I used a flat copper (bus bar?) and copper soldering thing as a heat sink.  I dont have the finished pic for some reason but it worked and the V in the pic shown filled in.  The copper helped build up the metal but doesnt get in the weld. Attached Images
Reply:Since it's a rotor is there a possibility of balance problems after the buildup?                                            MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Thanks for the replies. It's an industrial wood shredder, 450mm diameter, 2000mm wide (she's a big bugger!). There shouldn't be any issues with balance after building up, the rotors are always chipping teeth and losing chunks and continue to run with no major issues. I have spoke to my local welding consumables supplier and he has given me some pointers, seems pretty straight forward from his description of the technique.Sorry, no pictures available as the job is on site and I am unable to gain access before doing the job.
Reply:I'm surprised Expat hasn't commented on this or Specopswelder. I believe both have worked on Hardox in the past and has done some facing. Plenty of others have done overlays in the mining and heavy equipment industry. I'm trying to remember who rebuilt that  grinder or shredder a few years back.  Found it. It was Tozzi.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...Fun-Hardfacing.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
