Is there anything cheaper than ERA392A for welding magnesium? A guy asked me if I could fix  up two small drilled holes and one of the head bolt holes in his VW engine case so I told him I'd look into it. Looked in Enco and found that rod at $237. for one pound of 3/32" 14" long, and 1/16" was even more. It's only a favor I'd be doing but I think I'll have to turn him down if it's gonna' cost so much. There's commercial VW places to help him but it's got me curious if that particular filler is the only way to go. could it be patched with the almost universal ferrous metal 3000 fill rod?I THINK I can just melt the little holes closed but the head bolt hole is screwed up to just under 1/2" diameter.MM210TA186TA95sLincoln AC/DC Tombstonegood old Smith torch setup 24v Readywelder mig w/spoolgunSB H 10 latheBridgeport mill6x12 K.O.Lee surface grinderK.O.Lee tool/cutter grinder
Reply:VW cases are the hard to weld, Find an old one to practice on.
Reply:The old cases are generally repaired with "Case-Saver" inserts. The new performance cases have Case-Savers already installed.Last edited by shovelon; 01-06-2014 at 03:14 PM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Measure the hole. It just may need a threading and the case saver install. I don't know if 2 case savers are installed on that foto, but it would not be beyond me to try it.Last edited by shovelon; 01-08-2014 at 03:57 PM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
