DRAG!I recently saw a video that had someone pushing what appeared to be a dual shield wire.  I say that because it was welded with a traditional mig gun and seemed to have a gas cover.  I couldn't see the gas obviously, but the smoke from the flux was acting as if there was a gas coming from the nozzle.  Anyhow, don't follow this feller's lead.  It is always best to drag if you have ability to.  There are times when you can't due to location of the weld and obstructions or position.  This was a flat weld and could have been managed from either side.  It may just be a pet peeve as many will argue it doesn't matter, but I think it does.  You should always try to eliminate any possibility of entrapment or porosity whenever possible.  Pushing flux cored wire increases those possibilities greatly. This leads me to another pet peeve.  Since it is a close relative.  Try to create the best weld possible every time you weld.  It takes precious little time to grind metal clean.  Yes you can weld through paint, rust, cow manure, oil, grease, and God knows what.  Yes, there are rods that can do that.  Just because they can do that doesn't mean you should do that.  Don't be lazy.Bevel your joint!  Yes, you can turn up the heat and "burn" it in there!  Just don't.  You have a grinder, and you have cleaned the area.  It doesn't take but a couple seconds more of precious time to put a bevel on your joint.Lastly, don't listen to every tom, dick, and harry on youtube or welding forums.  That includes me!  Get a book, a real reference book!  If you think a book is wrong, find a book that backs your position or new reference work that can be relied upon.  There are good people on the internet.  They are good sources to get information from.  But most of the good ones will have a book that back up their position. So get some books.
Reply:aside from a say, an aws "d" book, do you have any suggestions? not trying to be coy or anything, serious, legitimate question, because all I have ever had to go off of is tom, dick, and harry, along with a couple fitting books. if you know of a book that isn't quite as expensive as code, I would love to read.tom and dick both told me never to push a cored wire, but harry said it was ok. . . . .bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:Lincoln used to have a how to weld book. Looked but couldn't find it on their web site. Might try second hand book stores. I did find under the support/ resources tabs all kinds of guides and videos. All were free to down load. You can try miller and esab web site also. They have all kinds of guides and information. If you did deep enough on EASB's site. You can find some online courses.
Reply:If you don't trust someone's word, you can always test the theories yourself. In my experience, it (anything except tig obviously) works better with a slight drag angle. Especially overhead fcaw. Try to push that, and pray you aren't standing underneath the puddle without leathers on. =(
Reply:The Miller site has videos and much other useful training material.
Reply:Scott, I agree with you, but what about vertical up hill with dual shield? Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:I just got certified at Lincoln, 3G E71T-1M , with dual shield you run it straight in, no push no drag however it is a little forgiving. Standard flux core you drag using the arc force to push the slag back.
