I am needing a new stick welder, was looking for a tombstone idealarc 250 and came across one these.  I have always wanted a tig.... What are these machines like?  As a stick? As a tig?   What do I need to look for when I am looking at one of these machines?
Reply:It has foot pedal, tig head and leads.  It is a gray machine, asking 600 obo
Reply:Make sure it works before buying. A lot of the repair parts are no longer available.See how the remote control connects. One round plug. Should have a pcb and electronic module to control welder out put. Two plugs, one 2 pin and one 3 pin. uses high current foot control. If it works it will weld very well.
Reply:For 6 bills you really can't go wrong.  It's power hungry though, to get the full amps out of it probably requires an 80'ish amp circuit feeding it.Like CC said, if it works it'll weld nice.  Make sure and test the high freq. at all amp outputs.  I've got the Miller incarnation, a black faced DialArc HF, and for some reason the HF won't start pure tungsten electrodes, but does fine with the T3 electrodes.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:Sorry for dumb question, but what should all be there for the tig?  Is there suppose to be a cooler?  I know of a foot pedal and tig gun
Reply:Better check to see if it even has HF. I know my former employer had one without. Good welder but I don't believe all where sold with HF.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:My first TIG back in 1990 was a Lincoln Idealarc, 250/250 TIG Stick. That was the baby brother to the 300/300. If working, they are a great machine. The only issue with the 300 is the size and weight. They are humungous and definitely need a 100 amp dedicated line to be able to turn them up all of the way. They should all have a gas solenoid since they are TIG and most will have been fitted with a water solenoid. You won't actually need the water solenoid if you plug your cooler into the face of the machine like I did and still do on my Miller Syncrowave 200. They had several of these at my welding school that used a sink with constant running water for coolant. Some issues you might encounter are dirty connections on the AC-DC+-DC- rotary switch but that is easily cleaned up. All of the machines I've seen have high frequency with an on-off-continuous switch. The high frequency unit has replaceable spark elements. Those can be found on eBay and from some LW'S's. If they have been cleaned too roughly, they might need to be replaced. With good ones, the arc is very nice and stable. The stick portion was very good on my machine as well. I'm really sorry that I sold my 250 because I found out later that it's not the welder, it's the welder. LOL. I think they are a great machine, though and if you can get it at a good price and have room and power for it, I'd go for it!Last edited by gnm109; 01-10-2014 at 03:40 PM.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
