Hi guys looked at a Logan lathe this weekend its a model #955 but it is 3-phase and I only have 220 single.Think it is worth the $500 investment he is asking for it.And any suggestions on cheepest way to convert it or should I just hold on to my money and keep looking for a single phase lathe thats allready to roll im looking to spend between $500-$800. Reply:I don't have a Logan, but I've heard a lot of good things about them.  I hear they are almost as good as a Southbend.  About the only thing electric (at least on my Atlas) is the motor.  I can't believe a motor transplant to single phase would be very hard.I gave $600 for mine, back in 1972.  It did come with a tool post grinder and some extras.  If this Logan is in any shape at all, I'd think $500 is a great deal, even if it didn't come with anything else.  My humble opinion, of course.
Reply:I can't say if it's worth $500 without taking a look at it in person but as far as converting to single phase that's no problem at all. You can use a rotary phase converter or there's several vfd's that take 220 single phase in and put 3 phase out. That's the route I went with my milling machine and I love it. I could have saved some money on my machine but I just had to have variable speed, But I can control the speed with the vfd so I could have just bought a step pulley machine. http://dealerselectric.com/mfg-subca...cID=165&mID=-1several options there, Just make sure you get the right size for your motor
Reply:http://www.lathe.com has all the Logan info you need. Scott Logan is the granson of the founder. I replaced a few of the motors on my South Bend lathes for 139 bucks each from 3 ph to single...Bobhttp://www.lathes.co.uk/logan/index.htmlBob WrightSalem, Ohio  Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun

Reply:Originally Posted by noriteIn addition with three phase you can plug reverse the motor.  This means you can thread right up to a shoulder, hit reverse and the motor almost instantly stops and starts turning in the opposite direction, without damage to the motor.  A single phase motor has to come to a complete stop before it can be reversed.
Reply:Originally Posted by aametalmasterThen you can spin off the chuck and cause more problems. Thats a fine way to stop/rev a spindle on a lathe without a threaded spindle but i don't think thats proper on this Logan. I know i unscrewed my chuck twice. Just my thought...Bob
Reply:Thanks for the all the help and advice guys really appreciate it .
