This is my 5th gate installation. This is the first time I have done it without a helper. It went really well. Post and gate ended up perfectly plumb and level.I am sure some of you will get a kick out of my rig/setup. I take a little money from each gate and make improvements to it. I am in the process of building jin poles and a trailer with an A frame to carry and install my gates. My new trailer is also going to have a water supply.....I am getting tired of rolling in grass fires.  http://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6r...o/DSC00473.JPGhttp://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-MZ...o/DSC00474.JPGhttp://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ic...o/DSC00475.JPGhttp://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ac...o/DSC00476.JPGhttp://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-gk...o/DSC00477.JPGhttp://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-rK...o/DSC00478.JPGhttp://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-x8...o/DSC00481.JPGhttp://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-sf...o/DSC00482.JPGLast edited by whiskeyrichard; 05-13-2013 at 10:06 PM.Miller TrailBlazer 301Miller 12rc feederMiller ShopmasterMiller 22a feederPlasmaCam CNC TableHypertherm 45 cutterDrills, saws, blast cabinets etc.
Reply:Thats a great setup! I may have to borrow your idea with the cherry picker to install a gate I am making!
Reply:Cool, I like the engine hoist setup. Great idea. Can't tell in picture but do you have a stiff leg at the end of hoist ?
Reply:prolly a stoopid question, but what is a stiff leg? (and yes I laugh when I type that). It is just the 2 ton shop crane from harbor freight transplanted onto an extended hitch......and yes, I did extend the shop cranes reach as well. I am sure that did not contribute to the overall safety of the setup, but it is getting the job done right now.wRMiller TrailBlazer 301Miller 12rc feederMiller ShopmasterMiller 22a feederPlasmaCam CNC TableHypertherm 45 cutterDrills, saws, blast cabinets etc.

Reply:I see. No, I do not have one of those. That receiver/hitch extension is commercial, and is rated to be able to support 650 lbs of tongue weight and my gates are always light than that, so I never worried about that setup carrying the weight.Miller TrailBlazer 301Miller 12rc feederMiller ShopmasterMiller 22a feederPlasmaCam CNC TableHypertherm 45 cutterDrills, saws, blast cabinets etc.
Reply:Smart idea!!I like how you use the engine leveler to level your gate for final welding, saves a lot of grief. That hitch will take as much as you'll ever load it, wouldn't worry about any type of additional support.  You'll know when the thing starts to stress long before it's damaged."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Wait a minute, I see two helpers in the cab..I thought you said you did it all alone..lol I love that gate, great clean design. What size post and gate materials? What type of hinges? Lastly, any close ups once installed.Great job, thanks for sharing.

Reply:Yeah, I always take my dogs with me. Usually get them out 2-3 times during the day for a walk or swim if there is a creek nearby. The gate frame was all 2x2x.095.The angle iron behind the sun was all 1.5x1.5x3/16The sun it self was all cut from 12 guage.......I'd use 16 next time.I figure the gate weight about 510lbsIt is 12 feet 9 inches wide and is 80 inches at the peak. If I recall correctly, the top arch was bent to a radius of 140.The post was 5x5x.250 and was put into a hole that was 3x3x3The hinges were part number 44-2005 from king metals. This gate sagged the least of any gate I have ever hung.I took the advice of somebody on here regarding the method of hanging it:Weld top hinge in place, clamp bottom hinge in place and let gate hang. Shim bottom hinge until gate is level and weld it up. In this case, there were no required shims.I also installed a liftmaster la400 opener with an exit wand, a remote keypad and 5 remote controls. There is a 5 foot stainless steel peacock that will sit on the top rail of the gate that I have to finish up and install on Saturday. I'll post a finished picture then.I charged $2k for the gate, and did all the site work (digging holes and pouring cement)and opener installation myself. I gave them the opener and all electronics at cost and charged $250 for their installation. The project when all said and done cost the owner $4500.00I'd be curious as to what you all think about the price....high, low, about right?Probably way too cheap, but they want a second one at another house, so it is all good.wRLast edited by whiskeyrichard; 05-14-2013 at 11:13 PM.Miller TrailBlazer 301Miller 12rc feederMiller ShopmasterMiller 22a feederPlasmaCam CNC TableHypertherm 45 cutterDrills, saws, blast cabinets etc.
Reply:I'm sure he got a bargain, though this may generate a whole lot of referrals. I would tell the owner to keep the price to himself. Excellent job, I appreciate the details you shared. I know I'll be bragging on your behalf.
Reply:The project looks like it turned out great! I have no clue how to price something like that, so just going by gut feeling I'd say you both got a good deal on it. One question though, did you have to run power down to the gate or is it on a battery/solar charger type of system? Just going by the box and conduit coming out of the ground I'm assuming you had to run power from the house, but I guess it could have come from a remote charger or something. Having had power run from my house to the garage a couple years ago so that I could have my welder hooked up, I know that can get expensive in a hurry!Powcon 400SM2-PD60 wire feedersMiller XR controlAlumapro push/pull gunSpeedglas 9100xBFH
Reply:There is power run from the house to the post. They had to run it 400 feet down a steep slope, across a creek and then way back up....all through think poison oak. I had no part of that work. They had the material (wire) and did all the digging themselves.wRMiller TrailBlazer 301Miller 12rc feederMiller ShopmasterMiller 22a feederPlasmaCam CNC TableHypertherm 45 cutterDrills, saws, blast cabinets etc.
Reply:In this pic, http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-x8...o/DSC00481.JPGIt seems pretty low to the ground.I'd be tempted to give more clearance. When the post sinks or tilts, or the road heaves, what's your plan ?
Reply:Very nice wR.I've never done any gates so can't comment on the price, how many hrs do you have into it though?Seems like the variety of work conditions would make up for some of the profit, sure looks pretty there. Are you mostly using your Passport?  I did sell a wire feeder to a guy that does nothing but gates up here.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
