Few pics of a truck frame repair I did couple weeks back for my local dpw.O7 chevy both sides completely broke all 4 sides of box frame. They pulled motor, hood fenders front axle, etc, etc.Added gussets to lower section of frame not shown in pics.Truck has 37k on it. Attached Images
Reply:What the hell did the customer do to break that, bending a frame is one thing but breaking it is another.Hobart IronMan 230Hypertherm 45XP on a CNC table1.5HP 9x42 MillUNIBOR EQ35N Mag Drill
Reply:That's crazy!!!  Good repair.
Reply:Municipal Grade plow frame on the front of truck which is heavy compared to a fisher mm or a boss etc etc.And I would say a bit of hi speed plowing by the guys driven it.

Reply:I'd heard of similar issues with decent sized plows on small frame trucks like this. When I went to buy mine in 07-08, the dealer was mentioning that trucks in this class set up with the plow package had to have frame reinforcements to prevent those same issues. It's not a "stock" option and that most guys don't know it has to be added to the standard plow prep setup. It gets worse as you start plowing closer to drive speeds on roads ways. The fact that a lot of these newer trucks have frames designed to fail in the event of a front end accident so as to protect the other vehicle doesn't help. The weak point on my 10' municipal grade Fisher is the truck to plow mounting hardware. The plow dealer and I had a talk about that. I'm guessing they went with the lighter pickup weight kit vs the one for the heavier 26000+ class trucks because of the newer frame issues. They'd rather that the plow kit fail vs the truck frame if you hit something, especially out at the tip of a wide plow with some weight behind it..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:That is an ugly break. Nice repair tho.
Reply:Nice work. When I lived up there, I worked in Fleet Maintenance for the city. High speed plowing is more common than you'd think, haha. The amount of carnage they produce is pretty amazing to.
Reply:Just think of the employee down time as well for the neck and back injuries that are claimed as a result of the sudden stops and such.  Snow plowing is an expensive necessity
Reply:Nice job Billy! I can say, I would have never had an idea on how to make that repair. Thanks for posting."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:That's crazy for a newer truck to break like that. Nice repair job! There is a municipality here in ny that has a new f-550 dump set up with a big commercial plow and a wing plow on the side! Looks like WAY too much weight hanging on the side of that truck. I see a short life for that poor F-550.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8
Reply:Thanks for compliments guys. This is one of those jobs that when I looked at it I was not sure if I should attempt this repair.I thought it over for a few hrs before telling them I could do it.There mechanics did all the strip down and re-assembly.I just did the frame work.
Reply:My local township has a 3500 chev thats a little older that broke similarly. Same thing too much plow/plowing if you want to plow like a big truck you need a big truck.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:Nice job. At least it was all stripped down and you did not have to do that. I have added gussetts for a few guys now on these style trucks. They bring me the gussests and I weld them on while they wait. I really doubt these 3/16" gussets are really going to prevent this but people claim they do. Also what add to this is the chemicals that are being used on the road. I call it "liquid corrosion". Go figure the state of CT. is doing a study on this. What a waste of tax payers money. In the Saratoga Ny area only sand is used in certain areas.
